First year teacher me would be shocked. 🤪🤯
My first year, the first few days looked like this: syllabus read-aloud, meet-the-teacher slides, a procedures PowerPoint, and an icebreaker nobody wanted to do.
10 years later, here’s what I do instead.
✏️ The syllabus waits until day 2, and we cover it with stations (sooo much more engaging).
✏️ Instead of telling kids about myself with a “meet your teacher” slideshow, I let them investigate my room for clues and back up their guesses with evidence.
✏️ Procedures and expectations become a game they move around the room to play. No longggggg slideshow that kids tune out anyways.
✏️ No icebreakers. We build actual community in more meaningful ways.
The difference in how my kids walked in on day 2 was immediate. If you want the full plan, I wrote out exactly what I do for the first full week, any subject, grades 5-12. Follow me, then comment “week 1 guide” and I’ll send it to you.
