For veterans and first responders living with hearing loss, a service dog trained in specialized hearing tasks can make a huge difference. At America’s VetDogs, our certified service dog trainers work one-on-one with each individual to tailor a dog’s training to their specific needs. Hearing dogs can be trained to alert to important sounds such as their handler’s name, a baby’s cry, a knock at the door, alarms, and more.
On World Hearing Day, we recognize the impact of hearing loss and reaffirm our commitment to providing service dogs at no cost to the veterans and first responders with disabilities.

We're so excited to celebrate a new partnership between U.S. Army Veteran Stacy and service dog Joule!
Throughout her training, Joule mastered a wide range of tasks including alerting to stress behaviors, providing deep pressure therapy, and offering coverage for increased situational awareness.
Stacy has found a steady support in his new best friend, who will provide him with greater independence and confidence in public spaces.
Thank you @blazecapefear for naming Joule and supporting our mission to serve Veterans!
Turning lights on and off might seem like a small skill, but for a Service Dog, it can make a big difference.
During training, dogs learn how to safely and reliably operate light switches as part of their future duties. For many handlers, this task supports independence by reducing the need to reach, strain, or move through dark spaces. It is also one of many skills that helps a Service Dog assist with daily routines and increase confidence at home.
Every behavior we train has a purpose. These foundational skills prepare our dogs to meet the unique needs of Veterans with disabilities and children with autism, helping them navigate everyday life with greater ease and independence.
Every skill we teach is powered by supporters like you. Learn how to get involved by visiting our website and selecting the Get Involved tab.

"Where did you get him?"
"Oh that looks cool, How can I get one?"
"How do I get to bring my dog everywhere with me?"
This question kind of bugs me.
A service dog isn't something you "want" it's something you need.
A service dog isn't something one simply acquires. You don't pop down to the Service dog store, drop some cash and get a fully trained dog.
Being approved by a program or training your own service dog takes a lot of work, dedication and time.
Service dogs aren't a "nice to have" item.
To many handler they are a necessity and getting one is an overhaul of how you function.
There are local programs and companies throughout North America. Google will be able to point you in the right direction.

Technically, this is an excellent example of a “center” command in a tight space. But maybe more importantly, this is an excellent example of a veteran a service dog building their bond during advanced training. The bond is key to forming a team.
While our trainers are looking for mastery of command words and positions throughout training, they are also looking closely for early signs of a good relationship forming between the dog and the veteran. When teams have hard days or face challenging situations, it is the bond that they will rely on. Luckily for this team, they both quickly accepted each other and their partner and the early bond was easy to see.

How can a service dog change a Veteran’s life?
Andrew Einstein, our PHL community representative and Veteran, shares how his first service dog, Gunner, became his lifeline and a source of strength during some of his hardest times. After returning home from military service, Andrew faced challenges that many Veterans experience in silence, including anxiety, hyper-vigilance, and isolation.
Service dogs are trained to interrupt anxiety behaviors, provide grounding during moments of distress, and create a sense of safety that allows Veterans to re-engage with life. Their support offers physical assistance while also restoring connection, purpose, and independence.
Andrew’s story reminds us that every partnership between a Veteran and a service dog represents another life strengthened through trust and support.
This is part 1 of a three-part series, with part 2 releasing on 03/16. Stay tuned to continue following Andrew’s story.

Service dogs are trained to increase handler independence by opening automatic doors, typically by pressing, nudging, or pawing the handicap-accessible button with their nose or paw.
