Friends of Nick Besobrasow, one of the two victims of the July 7 crash on Teton Pass, press Wyoming Highway Patrol Captain Marc Russell for solutions outside the Old Wilson Schoolhouse on Aug. 3.  “That truck came from my town,” Dawn Smith (center) said. “Where is Idaho in this equation?”  “This is the richest county in not just the state but the country,” added Jonnie Merrill, “so it falls on deaf ears when people start complaining about the cost to make things right.” Following the multi-car collision, residents from both sides of the steep mountain highway don’t want to wait for government solutions. They’re pitching a social media campaign and gathering data to educate drivers and officials. Nearly 200 showed up for a citizen-led town hall at an early August meeting. Hear more of their ideas in this week’s episode of Jackson Unpacked at 891khol.org.  🎥: Evan Robinson-Johnson / KHOL #tetonpass #jacksonwy #podcast #radio #891khol
New signs are up on the Idaho side of Teton Pass👀 Wyoming’s new WY22 Teton Safe Pass program is now being enforced. Vehicles over 10,000 pounds must be pre-certified before traveling Teton Pass beyond the Idaho-Wyoming border. We are helping get the word out with signs along SH-33 and at turnouts near the border. Learn more about the program and pre-certification process through WYDOT’s Safe Pass program.

Teton Pass is one of the steepest and most heavily traveled mountain routes in Wyoming, and after serious crashes involving heavy vehicles, trailers and RVs, WYDOT is introducing a new requirement aimed at preventing brake failures and loss-of-control wrecks. Beginning October 1, 2026, anyone crossing Teton Pass in an RV, towing a trailer, or operating a vehicle or combination rated over 10,000 pounds must complete the new WY22 SAFE PASS self-certification program. The program requires drivers to review information about: • Navigating the pass’s 10% grades • Proper braking and use of lower gears • Vehicle weight and load limitations • Current restrictions and seasonal closures • How to operate larger vehicles on steep mountain roads Once completed, drivers receive a self-certification letter valid for one year. If your vehicle falls into one of the required categories and you have not completed it, you cannot legally cross Teton Pass and will need to use another route. Drivers who ignore the restriction may also be cited. The existing 60,000-pound maximum weight restriction and all seasonal restrictions remain in place. Regular passenger vehicles are not required to complete the program, although WYDOT is encouraging everyone who regularly drives the pass to review the material. Certification is already available ahead of the October 1 enforcement date. Teton Pass connects Jackson Hole with eastern Idaho, and its grades reach 10%, approximately twice the steepness of an average mountain pass. It is beautiful, but it is not a road where you want to discover that you do not understand your vehicle’s brakes or transmission halfway down the mountain. Teton Pass is one of the steepest mountain highways in the country. When you’re driving the pass keep in mind: Overused brakes can fail, make sure your brake pads and rotors are in good condition. Slow down! You can quickly gain speed while descending. Shift down to a lower gear (save those brake pads) and keep your vehicle steady. There are inherent risks. Only drive the pass if you’re comfortable! You can always explore alternate routes, they exist for a reason. Safe travels all.

Visiting Grand Teton with an RV? Here’s what you need to know to get there! Follow @rving.eh for more RV adventures through the US & Canada! 🇺🇸🇨🇦 The Teton Pass is a high mountain pass that connects the town of Jackson, Wyoming with Victor, Idaho. Here’s everything you need to know: 🏔️ Basic Info • Elevation: 8,431 feet (2,570 m) • Location: in the Teton Range of western Wyoming, near the border with Idaho. • Highways: WY-22 (east) to ID-33 (west) 🚗 Driving Teton Pass • Scenic but Steep: It’s a very steep and winding mountain pass with grades up to 10%, sharp switchbacks, and no guardrails in sections. Not ideal those uncomfortable with mountain driving. • No Trailer Restriction: trailers are not allowed on the Teton Pass from November 15 to April 1 each winter. A 60,000 lbs maximum weight restriction is also in effect at all times.  • Descent Warning: If you’re headed westbound (from Jackson toward Idaho), the descent is particularly steep and sustained — make sure your brakes are in excellent shape. ✅ Pro Tips • Check Weather: Sudden snowstorms and fog are common, even in spring or fall. Go online and check the live webcams. • Fuel Up: There are no gas stations on the pass — fill up in Jackson or Victor. 📍 Alternative Route If you want to avoid the Teton Pass and steep grades: • Take US-26 east from Idaho Falls → Alpine → Jackson This route is longer but much more RV-friendly and scenic in its own right along the Snake River. Meet INVERSION. Some mornings around Teton Pass, you climb out of the valley and find yourself looking down at the clouds. That view became INVERSION. Inspired by the layers, shadows, and colors of those mornings above the valley, we turned a real experience from our backyard into one of the six original patterns of the Teton Series. Underneath the design is our proprietary sun shirt—150 GSM matte performance fabric, UPF 50+ protection, 4-way stretch, quick-dry construction, flatlock seams, reinforced thumbholes, athletic tapered fit, and our double-layer hood. A real place became a photograph. The photograph became a pattern. The pattern became INVERSION. Available now. Every pattern has a place. #SplitRidgeOutfitters #TetonSeries #Inversion #SunShirt #UPF50 #OutdoorApparel #FieldTested #BuiltForLongDays #TetonPass #DesignedInTheTetons #FromRapidsToRidgelines #FromRecoilToWhitewater #FreedomLivesWhereWeGo
On the 6th day of Yellowstone National Park roadtrip we were first heading into Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. We drove through the iconic Teton Pass, camped and Gros Ventre, and had waffles at the summit of Rendezvous Peak. #milesworthadding #grandtetons #jacksonholewyoming #crosscountry #roadtrip

Planning a Grand Teton trip and want the best scenic drives mapped out for you? Comment *Road Trip* and I’ll DM you our free book, 13 Epic Road Trips for National Park Lovers, so you can plug these straight into your plan. 1. Teton Park Road This is the “greatest hits” drive. We like driving it south to north in the morning so the sun is behind you and the Tetons fill your windshield instead of being washed out. Do Jenny Lake in the morning, a lakeshore picnic midday, and a sunset pullout on the way back. 2. Teton Pass This is the dramatic connector between Idaho and Wyoming with that fun little “Howdy Stranger” sign on top. What you don’t see on the map is how many people cook their brakes on the 10% grade here. Shift down early so you can actually enjoy the views instead of watching your temperature gauge. We like to stop at the top for a quick leg stretch and to really feel the drop into Jackson Hole. 3. Snake River Canyon This is the main highway into Jackson. In fall, the canyon walls and riverside cottonwoods turn it into one long tunnel of color. We like to pull over at the whitewater viewing spots and watch rafters run the waves while we stay dry. It’s also one of the drives where you really feel how the river carved the way you’re now casually cruising through. 4. Gros Ventre Road Gros Ventre starts as “just another side road” and then quietly turns into one of the best wildlife and wide‑open‑valley drives near the park. This corridor has excellent moose habitat, and we’ve seen more moose here than almost anywhere else around Grand Teton. Keep going and you’ll get lake views, big mountain backdrops, and those broken‑down cabins that were once part of a movie set. 5. Jenny Lake Scenic Drive Short, but it gives you the most dramatic sense of how steep and sudden the Teton Range really is. The mountains feel like they’re dropping straight into Jenny Lake. We like using this road as a final lap at the end of the day. All of these drives are woven into our Grand Teton itinerary. Download our free book, 13 Epic Road Trips for National Park Lovers.
