Last night @BoweryPalace for the 2nd sold-out night in tribute to the late revered @BlondieOfficial 🥁 legend @Clem.Burke, another highlight was seeing former Portland, OR-based singer-songwriter @MikeJSkill 🎤 🎸 & mod drummer Brad Elvis, both formerly of Detroit-originated '70s new wave power poppers The Romantics (for whom Burke was drummer for over a decade, and who set up Elvis as his replacement when Blondie reunited) perform a rave-up version of that band's 1979 radio staple "What I Like About You" (which Skill co-wrote, including the enduringly catchy riff) with @JesseMalinsSilverManhattan band members @Bandit0ntheRun 🎸 🎤, @JamesCruzBass bass/🎤, and @DamonIsaacSmith 🎹.

A Romantic Song: Power-pop band The Romantics released one of its biggest hits in 1979 with “What I Like About You” which appeared on the band’s self-titled debut album.
For those who are old enough may remember the song had heavy rotation on MTV during the early ‘80s. And who can forget watching drummer Jimmy Marinos killing it on vocals while bashing away on his drum kit.
The Detroit-reared band may have been big at one time in America, but Australians were even more fond of them for some reason. Down Under fans sent the single to the number two spot on the country’s music chart and was among the most successful single in 1980 (Can an Aussie explain why they were so big there?).
The song’s popularity also wasn’t too shabby in the U.S,, scoring in the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. #theromantics #80s #80smusic #80srock #80spop #powerpop /#classicrock #classicrockmusic #rockandroll #70smusic #rockandrollmusic #liveforlivemusic #70srock #rockmusic #mtv #australiamusic
The Romantics – “Talking in Your Sleep”
Released in 1983 as the lead single from In Heat, “Talking in Your Sleep” became The Romantics’ biggest hit, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Dance Club chart.
The track marked a shift from the band’s earlier power pop and garage rock sound into a more polished, synth-driven style. Producer Pete Solley (formerly of Procol Harum) added layered keyboards and programmed drums that gave the track a darker, more atmospheric edge without losing the band’s guitar foundation.
Wally Palmar handled lead vocals, with the rest of the band—Mike Skill, Coz Canler, Rich Cole, and Jimmy Marinos—adding tight backing harmonies. The lyrics center on overheard confessions during sleep, turning vulnerability into a catchy, minor-key hook.
The Romantics, known for their red leather outfits and earlier hit “What I Like About You,” rode the success of this single into MTV rotation and international exposure. “Talking in Your Sleep” remains one of the more enduring crossover hits of the early ’80s new wave era.

The Romantics formed in Detroit on Valentine’s Day 1977, a date that supplied the band’s name. Wally Palmar, Mike Skill, Rich Cole and Jimmy Marinos came from a city with several overlapping musical histories: Motown, the MC5, the Stooges and early Bob Seger. Before signing to Nemperor Records, they spent several years playing clubs that included CBGB, Max’s Kansas City and Cleveland’s Agora. Their debut album was produced by Peter Solley, a British keyboardist whose earlier work included the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Procol Harum. By 1983, the lineup had shifted, with Coz Canler on lead guitar and Skill on bass. Solley returned for In Heat, recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami in May and June 1983.
“Talking in Your Sleep” was the last song completed for the album. At first, the band had only the instrumental track, but Jimmy Marinos later said the group considered it too strong to abandon. The melody and lyrics were finished over several days, resulting in a five-way writing credit for Palmar, Canler, Skill, Marinos and Solley. Released in September 1983 as the first single from In Heat, the song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 in Canada. Its video was also placed in heavy rotation on MTV. On December 24, 1983, the Romantics appeared on American Bandstand’s Christmas episode at ABC Television Center in Los Angeles, performing “Talking in Your Sleep” and “Rock You Up” to the studio recordings, as was standard for the program.
