#MondayManifestation I took my debut novel, #SunSeekers, to one of my favorite bookstores in New York, @strandbookstore, in the hopes of one day finding it on a shelf there. Did you know that before the Strand became a New York landmark, it was part of “Book Row” a vanished neighborhood of 48 bookstores packed into just six blocks? From the 1890s to the 1960s, Fourth Avenue was the secondhand book capital of the world. The Strand survived because of Fred Bass, who started there at 13 years old sweeping floors. In 1957, Fred moved the shop around the corner to 828 Broadway. While his neighbors remained perpetual renters, Fred played the long game. After renting for 40 years, he made the ultimate New York power move: he bought the building for 8.2 million dollars. That purchase made the Strand immune to the skyrocketing rents that killed every other shop in the area. Even as a wealthy owner, Fred never left the floor, personally appraising books at the front desk for decades. He’s the one who coined the “18 Miles of Books” slogan and required employees to pass a literary test to prove they knew their Kerouac from their Kafka. The real estate lesson is clear: In a city that is constantly changing, the only way to truly protect your legacy is to own the ground you stand on. So much fun celebrating the launch of Rebecca Serle’s newest book, Once and Again, at The Strand last night. She was in conversation with Jessica Knoll and gave us insight into everything from their adventures scouting locations in Malibu that later inspired parts of the book to the ways their writing styles differ. I can’t wait to start reading Once and Again. In case you don’t know, Jessica Knoll also has a new book, Helpless, releasing this summer, which I’m really looking forward to as well.
