Here we’ve got a story about a band who’d already broken up by the time their biggest single came out…The Zombies, having been dropped by Decca Records, in 1965, after their first album, “Begin Here” failed to achieve commercial success, were a band without a home—until 1967, when CBS threw them a lifeline. They were resigned, and given a shoestring budget for their next album, Odessey and Oracle. Fun side-note…In Studio 3 at Abbey Road, with no money for strings, they found the mellotron John Lennon left in the corner after SGT. Pepper. Bingo. Back to the story…They finish the album with only enough budget for mono mixes. Single #1 is released and flops. Single #2 is released and flops. The album fails to chart, demand for shows disappears, and they throw in the towel in December, 1967. In the UK, it’s over, but in the states, unbeknownst to the Zombies, they had a champion. Al Kooper convinced Columbia, US to release “Time of the Season” in 1968, and it became a massive hit, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March of ’69. Needless to say, CBS called, and they got the band back together. Rod Argent gave Al Kooper a special shoutout when the Zombies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2019.
