SHAU’s Microlibraries rethink what a library can be - compact in form yet expansive in purpose, transforming public life in Indonesia. Conceived as small-scale reading spaces within dense urban areas, these pavilion-like spaces embody the studio’s idea of ‘socio-climatic architecture,’ merging passive design strategies with social programming - inviting children and neighbours to read and connect. Built with local craft and shaped by climate, they act as fragments of change: architecture not as a monument, but as a catalyst. Tosin Oshinowo speaks to STIR about ‘Alternative Urbanism: Self-Organising Markets of Lagos’. The project looks at informal markets in Lagos, foregrounding their grassroots inception and resourcefulness as a viable alternative to top-down urban systems. Through the project, on view at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025, Oshinowo hopes to provide a critical lens on the hyperconsumerist ideals of modernity. The project earned her a special mention in the Golden Lion awards.
