Kanye West Playing “Through The Wire” for Pharrell for the First Time (2004)
In a 2004 clip featured in the “jeen-yuhs” documentary, Kanye West previews “Through The Wire” for Pharrell while the two are in the studio together. It’s one of the earliest moments capturing Kanye not just as a producer, but as an artist fighting to be heard.
Pharrell immediately clocks what makes the record different — Kanye is literally rapping through the wire, recorded with his jaw wired shut following a near-fatal car crash on October 23, 2002. Every word lands with extra weight once the reality behind the recording sets in.
Clearly shocked & impressed, Pharrell walks out of the room, then comes back and tells Kanye, “You’re my favorite artist, man.” He follows it with words that would echo far beyond that session: “You gonna make it. And when you make it, keep that same perspective & the same hunger.”
Motivation from one visionary to another — neither knowing they were witnessing the very beginning of something legendary. Both visionaries that changed the game with their own twist looking at it now 22 years later.
