Robert Hass’s second volume of poetry, Praise, is the California Book Club’s April 2026 pick—and one we’re especially excited to feature. Through unexpected word choice, striking juxtapositions, and fluid enjambment, the two-time U.S. Poet Laureate crafts a collection that reaches for the unsayable while remaining open to beauty. And the conversation doesn’t stop there. Join us on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 5 p.m. PT for a free virtual event with Hass. In this wonderful clip, former poet Laureate Robert Haas talks about the things, both small and big in literature, that make us go “Whoa!” Especially interesting is the differences in that between Eastern & Western literature. Specifically, between the Greek tradition of catharsis and the Japanese tradition of (I won’t spoil it for you). I promise it’s funny! . And I’m reminded of the beautiful smallness of the ending of Haas’ own poem (Meditation at Lagunitas): Such tenderness, those afternoons and evenings, saying blackberry, blackberry, blackberry. . * Filmed at the Greater Good Science Center’s June 2016 conference, The Art & Science of awe.
