No big toe rubbing. No toe discomfort. That’s the win 🥲
Foot Sense and why it’s Important for Injury Prevention 🦶
‘Foot Sense’ refers to our feeling and connection of foot to earth. 🌎
Wearing barefoot or low profile shoes helps promote natural body movement and alignment. It improves posture through better spinal alignment and strengthens foot muscles, ligaments and tendons.
It improves balance through increased proprioception and spatial awareness.
Low profile shoes help promote natural movement and prevent knee and ankle injuries.
They can also help alleviate problems caused by plantar fasciitis.
So many problems with our feet and ankles could be easily alleviated with the addition of barefoot/ low profile shoes and an increased Foot Sense. 🦶

Step after step, your body relies on natural motion and alignment to absorb impact efficiently. Rigid ground disrupts that pattern.
When the foot can’t move as designed, the rest of the body compensates, and over time, that strain adds up.
Supporting your foundation helps support everything above it.

My method:
- @kttape on the first 3 toes and my heels
- @getsaltybritches lubing up the entire foot
- tight, synthetic @nike running socks
Really dialed the process in during the Transcon 2 years ago. Doesn’t matter how much rain, mud, or water there is.
Use this simple tape technique to help calm Achilles tendon sensitivity on the trail!
Here’s how kinesiology tape actually works:
👉 It can gently lift the skin, which may help with circulation and reduce pressure on sensitive areas
👉 It gives your brain extra sensory feedback, which can help improve muscle activation and decrease discomfort
👉 It can change how movement feels, which may help reduce Achilles tendon sensitivity during activity
How to apply it:
1️⃣ Start the tape under your heel and run it up along the Achilles toward your calf
2️⃣ I like to apply a short strip perpendicular to the long strip mid tendon but this isn’t absolutely necessary
3️⃣ Use about 25–50% stretch through the middle of the tape, and no stretch at the ends
🩵 Check the link in my bio for the tape I recommend!
Just remember, tape is a helpful tool, not a long-term fix 🙅♀️❌
The real solution is building strong, resilient calves and lower legs that can handle climbs, descents, and long hiking days 💪

This is where it starts.
A few months ago I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and bone oedema in my left heel.
Running properly isn’t on the table right now.
That’s frustrating.
But it’s also clarifying.
If I want to run 50km a day for 50 days, I can’t shortcut the foundations.
So this phase is about rebuilding from the ground up.
Learning how my feet move.
Restoring strength through the toes, arches and ankles.
Building tissue capacity before chasing kilometres.
Part of that right now is using Wild Toes from @thefootcollective to help restore natural toe splay and get my feet working the way they’re meant to again.
Not flashy.
Not exciting.
Essential.
I’ll be sharing parts of this process as I go — what I’m using, what I’m learning, and what’s helping.
Slow work.
Long view.

As a runner who healed my plantar fasciitis, I can say rest is key! Make sure you feel 100% back to normal for at least 2 weeks before easing back into your routine—slow and steady wins the race. #bunion

As a distance runner, I’ve learned that imbalances between left and right can go beyond just strength. Even though my left side is stronger, my left glute doesn’t fire as powerfully as my right, causing my lower leg muscles and tendons to compensate—and my left foot to take on more load. That’s where my plantar fasciitis developed. Understanding these imbalances is key to managing foot pain and staying strong. #bunion

Excessive cushion causes interference to the body — and this is the associated lag response. 💢💢
When there’s too much foam between your foot and the ground, your body loses clear sensory feedback. Your feet are packed with thousands of nerve endings designed to detect pressure, texture, and changes in terrain. That information travels up the kinetic chain to help your brain coordinate balance, timing, and force production.
But when thick cushioning dulls that signal, the body has to guess. The result can be a delayed response in muscle activation, altered mechanics, and less efficient movement.
Your feet were built to feel the ground.
Minimalist footwear helps restore that connection by allowing your feet to move, flex, and sense naturally. With a thinner, more flexible sole, your body receives clearer feedback and can react in real time — improving awareness, coordination, and overall movement efficiency.
