LIVE SESSION: Tom Tom Club – “Wordy Rappinghood” (Acoustic Live Version) on October 6, 2010.  Tom Tom Club did an acoustic version of their 1981 hit “Wordy Rappinghood” in the Tiny Desk Concert series for NPR a couple of years ago. Tom Tom Club began as a side project of Talking Heads' rhythm section: the bass of Tina Weymouth and the drums of Chris Frantz. The group's music was a staple of parties and clubs back then, and the music took on a life of its own in various samples and remakes, especially in the pop hit "Genius of Love." Watch the legendary band perform in a rare acoustic set at the NPR Music offices. From silky soul tones to grooves that refuse to sit still, his sound has definitely influenced the way we approach music and build our own vibe. So… we took a swing at it. We’ve made a cover of one of his tracks, and it’s now live on YouTube.

Known as the singer of Editors, Tom Smith explores a quieter register on Leave, taken from his first solo album. Without the band architecture, the song leans inward. Less tension, more space. Not a dramatic departure, but a clear shift in scale. This track works because of comparison. You don’t listen to it on its own. You listen to it against everything you already know.

2 years ago, clips of this video started showing up on my feed. No idea why. They just did. Now, I have a thing that when you shove something down my throat, I'll spit it right back at you. So for a few days I kept ignoring it. At some point, God knows why, I said "You know what? I'm just going to check this out so I can decide whether it's actually so good" and I did. I watched some live performances and I liked them, but I was pretty attached to the music I knew already, so I wasn't keen on finding more. Still something pushed me to listen to more of this "mystery man's" music. I think for a while I just wasn't sold. His music was great, but I had grown up on pop punk, so I missed that heavy beat and loud vocals. At one point I came across the song monster v1. At the time I was struggling a lot with my panic attacks, they were still debilitating. And I found comfort in the song. From there, I started looking up more of his discography and I found out his name was Tom Odell, and he had his own struggles. I discovered his love and respect for music, something I didn't see often in my life. I felt understood and his music became something special for me. It's now been 2 years. I've met Tom, I've met Georgie, I've met his band. I've made friends thanks to his music. I still struggle, a lot, but all the memories, the music and the solidarity it offers me are all still there. And I would never be able to imagine what my life would be like, if I hadn't clicked on that one link, but had just scrolled past like I'd been doing until then. I remember meeting @meme.devil in London and talking to her during the show. She was wonderful. I remember my first time seeing @tompeterodell himself, when he hugged me back in Schaffhausen. I remember the one time I met @tobycouling as well as the multiple times hanging out with @yelfrisvaldes and the time @jaz.lee_ gave me a setlist. I remember seeing the whole band on stage the first time, and the way it felt. So thank you, because my life wouldn't be the same without your effect on it 💙 #tomodell #tompeterodell #music #anotherlove #tomodellfan
