Illuminated values. This is one of my favorite ways to start my paintings. Establishing the big shapes, the lights and darks and the design hall with a touch of glow step to coming soon. #oilpainting #tonalismlandscape #tonalist #art #wip

Tonalist v10 ✅ My first real highball experience. I sprained my ankle 2nd attempt, took a bunch of sketchy landings but somehow muster up the courage to send on my last go. Shoutout to the @benchmarkclimbing crew for the psych, encouragement and spotting. I truly could not have done it without your support ✌️Raw uncut footage will be posted on my YouTube channel (see bio).

I find that Tonalist paintings usually contain large blocks of value. I use a rigger brush to place thin wisps of trees which act as a counter to the weight of the aforementioned chunks of value. So much about painting has to do with opposites. #tonalist #tonalistlandscape #fineart #arteducation #workinprogress #art #artist #artistsoninstagram #artgallery #artcollector #artoftheday #artofinstagram #arts #artdaily #artstudio #instaart #arte #artsy #contemporaryart #artgalleries #trees #virginiaartist

Some progress on this new 30x40” oil painting that I’ve been working on. The only thing I’m contemplating doing at this point is adding more work and lightening the value of the bottom grasses. #oilpainting #painting #landscapepainting #artwork #tonalist #fineart #pleinairpainting #pleinair #artistsoninstagram #igart #newengland #traditionalart #glazing #draw #sketch #trees

I almost stayed in the the studio on this foggy morning. The mountains were obscured by cloud, but I figured it could get interesting… 12x14, oil. #tonalism #tonalistlandscape #tonalist #pleinair #pleinairpainting #pleinairpainter #stradaeasel #rosemarybrushes #timelapsevideo #timelapseart #timelapse

A sunset on the Oka River, near the house of Vasily Polenov, the great landscape artist of the nineteenth century. Almost finished with this painting. Will tell you more about my trip to Polenovo in the upcoming posts. #contemporaryrealism #classicalrealismpainting #contemporaryrealismpaintings #tonalist #tonalistlandscape #sunsetpaintings #paintingdetails #fromlife #ontheeasel #landscapepainters #vasilypolenov #russianart #василийполенов #поленово #natureoilpainting #riverpainting #shishkin #realisme #pinturaaloleo #paintingtrees #paintingsunsets #artistepeintre #oiloncanvaspaintings #paintingprocessvideo

And still a little ways to go! Here’s proof I have in fact been painting lately. Excited to finish this 30x40, get it photographed, rewired and framed. Life is a beautiful bunch of chaos right now and somehow I’m keeping my ducks in a row, by the grace of God.
