Here I explain why I think The Tuke, made by TwinNeedle in Christchurch NZ, is the best transalpine pack available.
The Tuke is a medium volume pack designed to be as versatile as possible with Hikers, Trampers, and Alpinists in mind. Light enough for Te Araroa but rugged and featured enough for 6-day transalpine trips. The volume ranges from 53 litres for the Small to 63 litres for the Large, and can be extended.
“Tuke” is one Māori name for the endangered rock wren, the only truly alpine bird in Aotearoa, and reflects the terrain this pack is likely to be found in as well as it’s lightweight nature.

** The Three Passes **
6-10 February 2025. A classic East-West traverse of the Southern Alps of New Zealand, from Arthur's Pass to the wild West Coast.
My ten-year-old daughter Emilie and I teamed up with friends from the Hokitika tramping club to complete this trip over five days, exiting via the true right of the Styx River.
Distance: 53km
Passes: Harman (1321 m), Whitehorn (1753 m), and Browning / Noti Raureka (1411 m)
Total elevation gain: 2,989 meters 😱
After a long, hot slog up the Waimakariri River we opted to walk past bustling Carrington Hut and set up our @bigagnes_ tents on a mossy bench above the White River. There was talk of pushing on up over Harman Pass to Ariel Tarns, but the sunshiny lull of the river won out and by 7am the next morning we were climbing up the Tapoiti River to the first pass with low hanging morning mist obscuring the steep gorged sides, the tinkle of little waterfalls in our ears. Coffee was brewed and snacks shared at Ariel Tarns, then we picked our way carefully through the glacial moraine and ice sheets on the way up Whitehorn Pass. More snacks in the sunshine atop the Pass and time admiring the hanging ice sheet of Cronin Glacier before a long descent down the shattered rocky bed of Cronin Stream, arriving soaking wet after 11 hours at the CMC's Park Morpeth hut. After some negotiations with earlier arrivals and bunk juggling, some of us got a bunk in the hut ($10 a night for non-CMC members). The next morning we scampered up the scree slope of Browning Pass and shared fruit cake and coffee at Lake Browning before wandering on the Harman Hut.
Our group carried a couple of ice axes and Camp Ice Master micro spikes @camp1889outdoor from @gearshopnz as a safety precaution for the sections of icefield (remnants of the once mighty Whitehorn Glacier) on the way up Whitehorn Pass.
What a fabulous achievement for Miss 10 and our little group of lovely humans - so much fun within great company made for a memorable adventure 😍

My husband ran the transalpine Run during our official honeymoon, only 5 days after our wedding. So I spent more time without him during the day than together.
Was it still worth it? Yes, because he was so grateful every time he saw me on the course to run the last 5-6km with him. I was happy to share this emotional challenge with him. Support can look different than you expected it, and still be great. Would you have done it?
