Took full advantage of the warm weekend weather to get this custom walnut table sprayed and dialed in for install next week. Also spent some time finishing up an exotic slab from a project we started last year—something I’ve been slowly working on over the past few months. Still deciding on the perfect base for it, but one thing’s for sure… this piece is going to turn out incredible either way. TABLE BASE PARTS I sometimes do projects for a local company that does high end furniture and architectural projects. They call me when they have something complicated and needs a patient hand. This assignment was to create two pedestal table bases to support a large dining table surface. As you can see, each pedestal has a central white oak column with 8 white oak veneered fins radiating from the column. Where each fin meets the column there is a little cove. I thought about doing it on the router table, but the column would need to be held at an angle and it all seemed too imprecise. I decided that the best way to cut it was to make a sled that registers in the mortises for two of the fins. This way the cove was precisely centered between the fins. Worked like a charm with a little sanding on a 3/4 inch dowel to fine tune it. #pedestaltable #madeinmassachusetts #precision #routersled #madebyhand

Every custom table project has a moment where the pressure hits. This was mine. If I was off even a little, I’d have to start over… and any woodworker will tell you that’s the part you dread. What you’re seeing here part of the process of attaching the base pieces to the underside of the tabletop using Titebond III and wooden dowels. This method creates a connection that’s incredibly strong while allowing the finished piece to look like it was carved from a single slab of wood. Details like this are what separate handmade furniture from mass-produced pieces. Every joint matters. Every cut matters. Every step matters.
