Great to be back at the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music for our orchestral percussion workshops! At @pocketpercussion , we’re passionate about exposing the next generation of players to the incredible world of orchestral percussion 🥁✨ Today’s session covered a huge range of instruments and techniques — from the power of the timpani and tam-tam, to the precision of glockenspiel, plus grooves on congas & bongos and essential tambourine technique. Thanks to @guydublet for the incredible custom made tambourine. Such a great day working with a group of eager, enthusiastic percussionists diving into new sounds and skills. Exploring the Sounds of Steel Drums! We explored the vibrant sounds and tones of the steel drum, a musical instrument that brings the rhythm and warmth of the Caribbean to life. Steel drums, also known as steel pans, are known for their bright, melodic tones and uplifting sound that instantly makes you think of sunshine, ocean breezes, and island culture. During the lesson, students listened carefully to the different pitches and notes created on the drum’s surface. Each section of the steel drum produces its own tone, allowing musicians to play melodies, rhythms, and harmonies all on one instrument. Through listening, rhythm exploration, and discussion, this lesson helped our artists develop a deeper appreciation for world music, musical tone, and rhythm.
