APERTURE FOCUS + CORNER SUPPORT = GAME CHANGER 🎺💪 In this video, I dive into a crucial concept I call aperture focus—not as a fixed opening or closure, but as a dynamic swing-ability of the lips. The aperture constantly alternates between open and closed, and the quality of that swing—whether it’s more relaxed and open or firmer and shorter—directly affects the speed of vibration. This is how we control pitch and tone at the source. For comfort and a kind of spring-loaded resistance that pushes back against mouthpiece pressure, pucker is vital. Especially in the upper register, where the lips naturally want to clamp shut, the pucker helps maintain openness and prevents the vibration from being stifled. I also talk about the importance of corner engagement—not just drawing in, but focusing inward and outward simultaneously, like saying “too.” This helps balance compression with clarity. To illustrate all of this, I’ve come up with a simple and powerful paper exercise. It involves placing a folded piece of paper between the lips and the teeth—top and bottom—to simulate the kind of focus and containment needed during actual playing. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll be able to visualize that focused squeeze even without the paper, helping you avoid spreading into the mouthpiece cup—especially important for those playing on shallow mouthpieces. Nei giorni trascorsi tra caserme e piazze, udì il segnale di cavalleria che i soldati italiani suonavano ogni sera — e lo inserì nell'apertura del Capriccio Italien, Op. 45. Ottantacinque anni dopo, il trombettista Nini Rosso prese lo stesso segnale e fece il percorso inverso: invece di collocarlo dentro un'orchestra, tolse tutto intorno e lasciò la tromba da sola. E in mezzo alla partitura, nascose un passaggio che quasi nessuno conosce — una voce che sussurra in italiano: "Buonanotte, amore. Ti vedrò nei miei sogni. Buonanotte a te che sei lontano." • Il Silenzio vendette dieci milioni di copie. Nel 1965, fu numero uno in Italia, Germania, Austria e Svizzera — un assolo di tromba in competizione con la Beatlemania. Il suono che le caserme usavano per spegnere le luci divenne uno degli strumentali più venduti della storia. Nel 2014, Clint Eastwood scelse questa melodia per chiudere American Sniper — suonata durante il corteo funebre del Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.
