Helifishing 2022. We had just land in a sand bar and a huge curious pacu started to move around the bank close to us. I had rigg my dorado rod with a big streamer so I decided to tempt the fish just with that. He showed interest in the first cast and grabbed the fly in the second one. His run across the pool and the fight was EPIC. Deep in the Bolivian Amazon, the Tsimane community offers a rare window into human health before modern lifestyles. New research from Madeleine Getz, a PhD student studying global health in ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change and graduate service assistant at the Center for Evolution and Medicine, shows that despite having some of the world’s healthiest hearts, post-menopausal Tsimane women experienced increases in cholesterol and other blood lipids, similar to women in industrialized nations. “This suggests that these increases in cholesterol around menopause may be a human universal, no matter how or where we live,” Getz said. By working with groups like the Tsimane, we can better understand human health outside of industrialized contexts.
