Say hello to the well camouflaged turnstone! A common little bird here along the UK’s coast and one that’s definitely always entertaining to watch! I love it when birds live up to their name 🤩 When on a @birdsofpooleharbour Spring Safari the other day, we spotted a few of these medium-sized waders on the shores of Brownsea Lagoon. And they were turning stones! They do this to forage for small invertebrates under the rocks. They typically breed in the Arctic, and are found in bigger numbers during the Winter. This morning I got up early and walked along the promenade at Aberystwyth. I stood and stared at the gritty beach pounded by foaming waves generated by a smoky-grey sky. As each successive wave relentlessly rolled in, the water was plunged forward under its own momentum before being sucked back as if the sea itself were drawing breath. Swash and backwash. A silhouetted rock pipit rose from the seaweed-strewn groyne and landed not far from a cluster of rotund birds huddled against a breakwater: turnstones. As each wave crashed and spilled, they rose on fluttering wings to land beyond its frothing grasp. And preened. Stood on one leg. Went back to sleep, head tucked in. They took the tumult in their feathery stride, dealt with it, and carried on with casual calm. I’m often asked about my favourite birds, and turnstones are up there. Right up there. And the main reason - aside from their confiding charm and fabulous mottled chestnut plumage - is actually because I’d love to be like them, coping with everything that life throws at me with similarly-assured composure. I don't know what happened to the turnstone population in St Ives, but I could swear that once upon a time they were a rare sight? Now they happily scatter the whole seafront, and appear to quite like mealworms. Maybe I'm just misremembering the past, or thinking back to holiday trips where I'd have been a screaming 6-year-old that delicate little birds would have wanted nothing to do with.
