All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) both send power to all four wheels, but they’re engineered for very different driving worlds. AWD is an automatic system that uses sensors and onboard computers to constantly monitor grip and distribute torque between the front and rear axles — and sometimes even side-to-side to maximise traction without any input from the driver. 4WD, on the other hand, is typically driver-selectable, stays in 2WD until you switch it on, and is built for serious off-road duty. Most true 4WD systems offer a low-range gearbox for crawling over rocks, steep inclines and deep sand or mud — something AWD doesn’t have. The trade-off is that 4WD drivetrains are heavier, less efficient when engaged and demand the driver know when to switch modes, but when the road disappears entirely, 4WD’s mechanical lock-ups, low range and rugged hardware put it in a different league from AWD. #powerdrift #tyron #volkswagon
