In 1977, Elvis Presley sat down at a piano in South Dakota, in visibly failing health, and summoned one last performance that the world would only see after he was gone. The moment came on 21 June 1977 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, South Dakota. CBS had signed a deal earlier that month to videotape concerts during the summer, and the resulting special, Elvis in Concert, was culled from two shows — Omaha on 19 June and Rapid City on 21 June — with much of the Omaha footage deemed unusable due to sound and performance problems. ‘Unchained Melody’ was written by Alex North and Hy Zaret and immortalised by the Righteous Brothers, and it demands enormous sustained vocal power — precisely what Presley had least of by that summer. What makes this performance so compelling is how utterly stripped it is. He performed it essentially solo at the piano with only minimal accompaniment — no flashy production to divert attention, giving it an intimacy that made it feel deeply personal, his voice shaking and soaring in a final reminder of what he could do. Bloated, exhausted and clearly unwell, he still reaches for every note as though the song mattered more than his own condition. His actual final concert came five days later at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, but Rapid City was the last to be filmed and recorded. Presley died at Graceland seven weeks later at 42, and the special and accompanying album were broadcast and released on 3 October 1977, six weeks after his death. Baz Luhrmann later closed his 2022 film Elvis by recreating this exact performance, before cutting to the real footage. Today, this performance stands as the most haunting farewell in popular music — a man with almost nothing left, giving every last piece of it away. Follow us @iconiclivemusic for more…
🎵 Elvis Presley – “Unchained Melody” (Rapid City, South Dakota, 1977) One of the last times the King ever stepped on stage, and he gave it everything he had left. Performed on June 21, 1977, just weeks before his death that August, this rendition of “Unchained Melody” captures Elvis visibly struggling, breathless between lines, pausing to steady himself, his physical decline impossible to hide by this point. And yet he still pushes through to deliver the song’s soaring final notes, an almost unbearable display of will from a man whose health and personal life were both unraveling behind the scenes. Footage from this era has become some of the most emotionally difficult Elvis material to watch, not because the performances are weak, but because the effort behind them is so plainly visible. It’s a stark contrast to his earlier, effortless charisma, and that contrast is exactly what makes moments like this linger, a reminder that even at his most depleted, Elvis was still fighting to give his audience something real.

“Unchained Melody” – The Righteous Brothers (1965) from the album Just Once in My Life There’s a timeless beauty in “Unchained Melody” that has made it one of the most cherished love songs ever recorded. Carried by a haunting melody and Bobby Hatfield’s unforgettable vocal performance, the song expresses the ache of separation and the hope of being reunited with someone deeply loved. The lyrics are filled with longing, devotion, and the passage of time, capturing emotions that feel just as powerful today as they did decades ago. Every note builds with sincerity, turning the song into an unforgettable expression of love and yearning. Although originally written in 1955, the version by The Righteous Brothers became the definitive recording, earning worldwide acclaim and becoming one of the most iconic ballads in music history. Its popularity soared again after its unforgettable appearance in the 1990 film Ghost, introducing the song to a new generation of listeners. Decades later, “Unchained Melody” continues to resonate because it speaks to the universal desire for love that endures through time and distance. “Unchained Melody” is out now everywhere!
“Unchained Melody” is one of the most haunting performances of Elvis Presley’s final years. Elvis recorded the live version on June 21, 1977, in Rapid City, South Dakota, just five days before his final concert in Indianapolis on June 26. The performance was later featured in the posthumous CBS special Elvis in Concert, giving the world a glimpse of Elvis during the final months of his life. What makes the performance so unforgettable is the contrast between Elvis’ visibly fragile condition and the strength of his voice. Sitting at the piano, he delivers “Unchained Melody” with remarkable emotion and power, turning the song into something deeply personal. Although it is often described online as his “final performance,” it was not his last concert—his final show took place five days later at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. Still, “Unchained Melody” remains one of the most powerful recordings from the end of his career. #elvispresley
