UNDERCAST

A cold front finished moving through our area earlier this afternoon, resulting in clouds clearing above the station and showers ending at the summit. Winds also began to increase and shift from westerly to northwesterly. As the winds changed behind the front, they pushed the clouds faster over the Northern Presidentials and into the Great Gulf Wilderness. This resulted in clouds experiencing a hydraulic jump on the Leeward side of the mountains, similar to the phenomenon that produces rapids in a river downstream of rocks just below the surface. The passing of the cold front can be observed in the time-lapse as the undercast increases over time, and the hydraulic jump becomes more pronounced towards the end of the video.

Just one of those rare mornings of absolute bliss, undercast, and extremely good company to enjoy these mountains.

Been out of commission for almost a month now. I’ve missed some incredible sunrises, sunsets, and the undercast that hung around for a few days. This has been the longest I’ve gone without being in the mountains in the last four years and it feels a bit weird.
I’ve been keeping myself sane by going through my camera roll to reminisce on past experiences in mountains. This day in particular has been one that I’ve continued to reflect on since it was the last sunset I saw before taking time away from the mountains.
