I used to use a stamp, but quickly realized how difficult it was to get a clean impression on a bubbler, since I can’t support it from the inside.
I have been hand-signing all my pieces for more than a year and love the personal touch it brings to each one.

Learn how to make your own underglaze transfers in 4 easy steps using Newsprint paper. I have to say, I prefer the decal paper I bought from Sanbao but Newsprint paper is much cheaper and works too. You just need to make sure you wet it enough so that it sticks to your clay properly.

Carving in Underglaze!

Not a regular pencil. Underglaze pencils are made for ceramics. You draw on bisqueware, glaze over, and the design fires permanently into the piece.
Start with a light sponge coat of glaze first so the pencil work doesn’t smudge.
This is an experimental piece. I painted white underglaze over leather hard clay and carved through. This clay is more cream colored when fired, so I’m hoping the white will create more dimension. I’m loving it so far! It may not be noticeable enough to see through the glaze, but either way, I’m optimistic for a great end result.
This pattern explores using the square blades to make stair step grooves, which can be used to create some interesting sunburst type shapes. Overall it was pretty quick and doesn't take up a lot of room. This piece is just bare Bee Mix, so incorporating some underglaze or slip could add a lot of potential.
For the stair steps, I tried to make each cut as even as possible, then came back and smoothed out the "ridge" in between. You can still see the lines, but they shouldn't be as pronounced after glazing.

At first glance, it almost looks like watercolor painting.
But this is actually a traditional underglaze ceramic technique demonstrated at the Art in Clay Festival by an incredibly talented artist who studied this craft in China for many years.
Watching the brush apply and pull back the glaze was completely mesmerizing up close.
One color.
One brush.
Thousands of tiny movements and subtle shades creating something timeless by hand.
And then seeing the finished fired piece at the end - absolutely incredible.
This is the kind of artistry and cultural craftsmanship that made the Art in Clay Festival such a special experience.
Tag a clutz who would get unlucky and bump into something and drop this 😂 @caitienorth
