No equipment? We’re still getting stronger 👏
2 bottles of mouthwash + self-adhesive wrap = easy light weight for a motivated but grossly weak patient.
Acute care rehab is all about being resourceful.

REPOST- @erika_america_ot & @erikaamericaot -Acute care OT moves fast! OT practitioners assess, treat, and support patients in their recovery—helping with mobility, self-care, and assistive devices while collaborating with healthcare teams. #WhyChooseOT #AcuteCareOT #OTInAction #OccupationalTherapy
Adaptive Device vs Assistive Device (OT Basics) 👇
Adaptive device 👉 makes the task easier (modifies the task)
Assistive device 👉 supports the person (improves function)
Difference:
• Definition
Adaptive: device modified to make a task easier
Assistive: device that improves independence and safety
• Focus
Adaptive: specific task
Assistive: overall function
• Purpose
Adaptive: to adapt the activity
Assistive: to enhance or maintain independence
• Scope
Adaptive: limited (ADL-specific)
Assistive: broad (mobility, communication, self-care)
• Examples
Adaptive: built-up spoon, button hook, long-handled comb
Assistive: wheelchair, walker, hearing aid
Easy trick to remember 🧠
👉 Adaptive = change the task
👉 Assistive = support the person

Another day, another glimpse into what OTs can do , we simply turn daily tasks into meaningful therapy #OccupationalTherapy #OTStudent #health#placement #explore
As OTPs, our goal isn’t to hand out equipment automatically — it’s to promote safe, meaningful independence through individualized recommendations. Reachers and walkers can play a huge role in long-term safety and fall prevention, but they’re not appropriate for every client.
Before recommending any device, we ask:
✔ Can the client safely perform the task without extra equipment?
✔ Does the device increase independence — or create unnecessary dependence?
✔ Will it genuinely reduce fall risk based on their abilities, environment, and goals?
✔ Is there a simpler or more functional solution?
✔ What are the client’s long-term strengths, habits, and routines?
If a client can already bend, reach, retrieve items, or ambulate safely without assistive equipment, then recommending devices isn’t only unnecessary — it may undermine confidence, autonomy, and natural movement patterns.
Assistive devices are tools, not automatic prescriptions.
Our skilled reasoning determines when they support safety, efficiency, and participation — and when they’re simply not needed.
At the end of the day, the best intervention is the one that empowers the client to function safely, confidently, and independently in their environment. 🧡🧠

Is your patient’s physiology ready to handle standing?
After prolonged bedrest or severe illness, the cardiovascular system often cannot tolerate sudden upright positioning. Patients may become dizzy, nauseous, or hypotensive when moved too quickly to standing.
This is where graded orthostatics becomes essential.
Instead of jumping from supine to standing, we can gradually reintroduce upright positioning through progressive stepwise approach.
This allows the body to adapt to vertical load while monitoring symptoms and vital signs.
Small exposures to upright positioning can improve tolerance, support circulation, and build the foundation for mobility progression.
In acute care rehab, the goal isn’t rushing to standing.
It’s helping the patient’s physiology catch up to the task.
