Ever wondered where the Joy Division 'Unknown Pleasures' album cover originated? ✨ What exactly was on the cover that intrigued people and critics so much? It was a black and white diagram with white uneven lines rising and falling in succession against a black background. What did it portray? Was it a graphic representation of a heartbeat? Was it a pen diagram of mountain ranges? Was it the visual of sound waves? Or did it symbolise anything at all? The speculations knew no bound and the queries kept rolling in. The cover was more mystifying and wonderous than it appeared to be too, as it was connected with the mysterious world of galaxies. Simply put, the image is a “stacked plot” of the radio emissions given out by a pulsar, a “rotating neutron star.” This sudden overload of astronomical terms might be a little overwhelming, but the concept though “unknown”, gives one immense “pleasure”. To trace the pulsar’s origin, we need to rewind a little. The pulsar named CP 1919 was discovered in 1967 two Cambridge academicians – A student named Jocelyn Bell Burnell and her supervisor Antony Hewish. As per their observation, when the star turns, it emits electromagnetic radiation in a beam, much like a lighthouse overlooking a vast stretch of a dark ocean. Radio telescopes can pick up these radiations; hence, each line on the image is an individual pulse, varying in length as waves travel a long distance confronting various obstacles on the way. #JoyDivision #UnknownPleasures #FarOutMagazine

On this day in 1979 Unknown Pleasures was released. The debut album that brought you some of Joy Division's most loved tracks. Listen to the album via the link bio
“Unknown Pleasures” the debut studio album by Joy Division was released on this day 44 years ago by Factory Records. 15-Jun-1979 The album was recorded and mixed over three successive weekends at Stockport’s Strawberry Studios in April 1979, with producer Martin Hannett contributing a number of unconventional recording techniques to the group’s sound. The cover artwork was designed by Peter Saville, using a data plot of signals from a radio pulsar. It was the only Joy Division album to be released during Ian Curtis’ lifetime. Factory Records did not release any tracks as singles from the album nor did the album chart. It has since received sustained critical acclaim and has been named as one of the best albums of all time. Also keeping the t-shirt industry going all this time !! #joydivision #unknownpleasures #postpunk

On this date in 1979, JOY DIVISION's debut album UNKNOWN PLEASURES entered the UK Album Chart at #71 (Aug 23, 1979) Arriving in June 1979, UNKNOWN PLEASURES delivered a new and terrible beauty to the world, ensuring that the band would be heavily eulogised. The cover was absent of band photos, and minimal information lay within; yet the music, the words and the feeling seemed immediately to resonate with the listener, its world-weariness stark and infectious. Today it may be easier to historicise this inaugural effort – to give context to the fusion of icy post-punk rock, poetic words and dramatic performance – arguing that the forbidding soundscapes embodied the cruel sweep of Thatcherism and the embittered workforce. "It was Joy Division's fate to enact the disappearance of their communities, the psychic poison of dispossessed Britain, the raging emotions that had been repressed by wartime's stiff upper lip," commented Jon Savage in the liner notes of PERMANENT, a compilation of the band’s material. Whereas the Factory Sample tracks were lightweight and sharp, Unknown Pleasures utilised a fuller, more imposing method of production. The album displayed two levels, a background of partially hidden noise — smashing glass and muffled screams — and the music itself which, despite its definite sadness, remained instantly accessible. It was this accessibility which made Joy Division so unique. Lyrically they dealt in desperation, violence, frustration, loneliness and degradation and they left these intense feelings on full view to the world. The crisis messages of DISORDER and NEW DAWN FADES had a genesis that stemmed not from punk lethargy and indifference but from genuine day-to-day torment. The more you listened to them the more personal they felt. Of course we could heap a ton of praise upon Ian Curtis but that would detract from the success that came from the sum of their parts – Hooky's melodic basslines, Morris' krautrock-inspired metronomic drum patterns, Bernard's way of guitar echoing Curtis's mood.
