The Urbanization of Asia, 1870-2025
At the end of the nineteenth century, most of the world lived in rural areas - even in densely populated South and East Asia.
The most-concentrated centers of populations were in the Middle East where climate and environment encouraged an early form of urbanization in Iraq, Jordan, and Persia.
But after the First World War, increased global trade made East Asian cities more important. And after WWII, cities like Tokyo, Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong, Manila, and Malacca dominated the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Yet by 2000, the Middle East was still home to the most urban populations in Asia. Only now they were concentrated in the Oil States of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Emirates on the Persian Gulf.
Today, an estimated 66% of the entire population of Asia lives in urban areas.

Over the last 40 years, Greater Manila has expanded from a dense capital city into one of the largest urban regions in the world.
Satellite imagery shows how farmland, wetlands, fishponds, and small towns surrounding Manila gradually gave way to subdivisions, expressways, industrial parks, ports, and high-rise districts stretching deep into Cavite, Bulacan, Laguna, and Rizal.
The wider Greater Manila Area is now estimated to hold nearly 30 million people, making it one of the planet’s biggest urban agglomerations. Economic growth, migration from across the Philippines, and the rise of business hubs like Makati and Bonifacio Global City helped fuel decades of rapid development across the region.
NASA studies have documented how urban land around Manila expanded dramatically from the late 1980s into the 2010s, transforming much of central Luzon into a nearly continuous urban corridor.
The growth also brought mounting pressure on transportation, housing, flooding, and public infrastructure, challenges that continue to define life across the Philippine capital region today.

Imagine the Bosphorus completely drained. Shipwrecks buried for centuries finally exposed on a dry, cracked seabed. The iconic 15 July Martyrs Bridge standing over nothing but dust and abandoned vessels. A haunting apocalyptic scene that feels like the end of the world. Now fast forward the same view, the same bridge, but a thriving metropolis filling every inch of the landscape. Thousands of apartment blocks, a mosque at the center, streets full of life, Turkish flags waving proudly. From a post-apocalyptic nightmare to one of the most vibrant cities on Earth. Istanbul never stops evolving. This city has survived empires, earthquakes, and centuries of change and it always comes back stronger. 🇹🇷🏗️✨

POV: A “developing country” skyline? Guangzhou, China 🇨🇳
China is still classified by the IMF as an emerging/developing economy, but cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, and Wuhan make you question what “developing” really means.

The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. But its buildings are still standing.
Walk through Warsaw, Kyiv, Bucharest or East Berlin today and you'll see them — massive concrete blocks, identical windows, identical floors, identical lives stacked on top of each other. Designed that way on purpose.
Brutalist architecture wasn't just cheap construction. It was ideology in concrete form. The state telling you — you are not an individual. You are a unit. You live where we put you. You work where we send you. Your home looks exactly like your neighbor's home because you are exactly like your neighbor.
It worked as social engineering because it was inescapable. You couldn't opt out of the architecture. You lived inside the ideology every single day.
Now these buildings sit in the middle of modern cities like frozen arguments about a world that no longer exists. Some want them demolished. Others say tearing them down erases the truth of what happened there.
Either way the concrete outlasted the system that built it. That says something.
