@castle_howard in Yorkshire is one of the most celebrated stately homes in all of England, with a 300-year history stretching back to its original design by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1699. It has been the setting for multiple films and TV shows, including Bridgerton and Brideshead Revisited. The centuries have seen the castle decorated and redecorate time and time again, yet many elements of its original design remain, so that layers of history sit together comfortably in every room. The current custodians of the house, Vicky and Nick Howard, brought in Anglo-American interior designer @remy_renzullo to help with the refreshing of their private rooms as well as the more public areas of the house, as featured in our new June issue. “My hope is that they look as if they have been like this for decades,’ Remy says of his ongoing work, which involves small tweaks in some places and whole schemes for others. Continuing our tour of Blenheim Palace this reel shows the monumental South front.
.
Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, this facade has wonderful Corinthian pilasters, progressing to columns in the central portico.
.
I personally love the portico, which is surmounted by a huge bust of Louis XIV, taken by the Duke of Marlborough from the city gates of Tournai, this bust used to overlook a vast formal garden, with fort like retaining walls, later swept away for a more natural look.
.
As you can see the weather was terrible on our last visit to Blenheim, I need to return someday as re feature the exterior of the house, as the stone looks so much better in dry weather.
.
Blenheim is a member house of @heritagexplore please see accompanying story to book to visit or for events.

This wasn’t a home. It was a statement.
📍 Castle Howard, North Yorkshire
Castle Howard was begun in 1699 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle —
designed by John Vanbrugh as a bold Baroque showpiece of power and ambition.
Its great dome, sweeping axes, and theatrical façades weren’t about comfort.
They were about legacy.

AD Wonderful to visit Blenheim Palace! This year the ‘Blueprints of Power’ exhibition - an incredible immersive visual experience - is on display. Discover the rivalries, genius and ambition of John Vanbrugh, his theatricality as a playwright, and his intense rivalry with the fiery Sarah Churchill, 1st Duchess of Marlborough. Don’t miss it! #BlueprintsOfPower #BlenheimPalace
⛅️Yes it is for me!
This temple in Castle Howard is the closest thing to architectural paradise: an order very influenced by Palladio (never forget the shape of Villa Rotonda here) and best virtues of severe baroque style in England. In this case John Vanbrugh developed just for a leisure pavilion, all his creativity. Triumph vases mixed with a rotunda, columns with goddesses, and a simple interior just to read or to take a frugal dinner. That’s a very fast summary of what it is the Temple of the Four Winds in Howard estate.
What do you think about this architecture masterpiece?

Vanbrugh 300 - The Cast of Players
I spent last night at @seatondelavalhallnt watching the building come to life in the most beautiful way 😍
To celebrate 300 years of Sir John Vanbrugh’s design, they’ve created a projection show that lights up the main hall with stories, movement and so much atmosphere. It’s one of those things that’s hard to capture fully.
It runs till Saturday 28th March, gates open at 7.15pm, first showing is at 7.30pm, then 7.50pm, 8.10pm, 8.30pm, 8.50pm. It’s free and open to everyone so no National Trust membership required and no need to book.
Cafe is open and so is part of the Hall for you to explore. Definitely worth a visit ☺️

✨ A unexpected view from above the Vanbrugh Hall…
This behind-the-scenes view takes us right up into the rafters, revealing the domed ceiling of the Vanbrugh Hall from above. Created in the early 1720s, the ceiling is designed to be viewed from far below within the vast space of the Hall.
A rare perspective on one of Grimsthorpe’s most extraordinary interiors!

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED (1981) & CASTLE HOWARD
The 1981 television adaptation of Brideshead Revisited is acclaimed for its lavish production, faithful portrayal of Evelyn Waugh’s novel, and nuanced performances.
Its exploration of faith, class, and love left a lasting impact on British television, setting a standard for literary adaptations…
…and reviving an interest in English country houses that lives on to this day.

The Cast of Players ✨
Today marks 300 years since the death of architect and playwright Sir John Vanbrugh and to celebrate @seatondelavalhallnt has put together an incredible free light show in partnership with @richardeyers.photography and Illuminous which will run until Saturday night.
SDH will always be a very special place for me, I grew up on a neighbouring farm and played in its gardens as a kid. My grandparents are buried there in the same plot as Lord and Lady Hastings, so I was not only honoured to be asked to capture drone footage of this spectacle, but I was kindly invited to be photographed and feature in this wonderful production!!
So if you do managed to visit, keep an eye on the main door and see if you can spot my cameo appearance!

This is the Temple of the Four Winds at Castle Howard. Originally called the Temple of Diana its windy name is apt for its location.. Designed in the 18th century by Vanbrugh (who didn’t live to see it finished) it’s based on Palladio’s 16th century Villa Rotunda in Vicenza. Palladio is so interesting and was hugely influential on British architecture- when we talk about ‘Palladian’ splendour of some of the big country houses we refer back to this 16th century Italian architect, who was held up by our 18th century architects as one of the greats. English architecture 1660-1720 was actually my specialist subject for my undergrad at Oxford which seems a bit off topic for art history but it was fascinating!
