CNC Machined out of 1018 steel, this worm can be swapped in for the existing one in Vandercooks (part DR-338) to allow for an extremely tight oscillation. Control your blends or create crazy split fountains of 6 or more colors! Each order also comes with 2 hi-strength steel dowels that are used in place of a crescent hand machined by myself. This is an order for a single worm, so if your press has two oscillating rollers, you will need to purchase two for optimal use. To the best of my knowledge and with the help of other, this part will fit the press models below. It may fit presses not on this list, please feel free to reach out to confirm measurements. Part 5 of 6: printing on the Vandercook! This wonderfully simple machine was made to proof type before it got put in the big, fast press to print thousands of sheets. If you’re going to print that many of something, you’d better check it for errors first! 🧐 This Vandercook 219 OS was made in Chicago in 1947. I bought it refurbished in 2014 (I think?) and had it painted the color of my grandpa’s 1963 Chevy Bel Air. 😍 After printing, there’s really only one thing left to do. I had too much fun making this poster and this entire series for @gillianwelchofficial and @davidrawlingsmusic so far - a few months ago - I pitched an idea to create an “illuminated manuscript” series - choosing a few of their songs with particularly vivid narratives and transforming them into a medieval setting. The first featured “Red Clay Halo,” and this current poster features “Cumberland Gap”- I’m going to make a second or third post dedicated just to the research for these images - if you’ve been following along in my stories, you might’ve seen some bits and pieces, but I’ve taken a deep dive into the world of the 1200-1400s and man-alive, were they a wildly creative bunch when it comes to depicting “the devil.” Seeing that the Cumberland Gap is “a devil of a gap,” I thought it’d be a perfect time to pull from that wealth of hellish inspiration. My version came out much happier, but it’s probably a lot to do with the color choices - though if you see the side by side comparisons - each monster of mine has an equally silly (albeit more sinister) twin from dark age history. Everything has tails or wings and horns - dogs as dragons, men as fish, lions as strange chicken lizards…the list is endless. My particular favorite animal combo was the one whose thighs were each possums whose mouths opened at the knees to make way for chicken legs. (See the guy in the top right?). Anyway, I like to imagine the innocent boy venturing into the wild mountains toward Kentucky, as a bard (a la Canterbury Tales)- singing his song of fear and woe as he narrowly skirts past the goofy yet ill intentioned creatures lurking behind the bushes all along the pass. #kissmemamakissyourboy #idratherwrestlesatan . . . #linocutprint #linoblock @aconyrecords #letterpress #blockprint #printmaking #handmade #reductionprint #vandercook #americanamusic #cumberlandgap

Press painting I use my Vandercook 219AB proofing press to create monotypes. I've always wondered how my recent years of painting would influence this technique. It's a slow methodical process but wonderfully therapeutic. Curious to see if I start missing my fast paced painting! We shall see where this squirrel moment will lead! Ever wanted to turn a digital drawing into a relief print? ✨ That’s one of Kyle’s go-to processes. While many of his earlier relief prints were done in lino, once we got the Vandercook and our plate exposure unit he shifted quickly into photopolymer plates. There is something very art-school-meets-science-lab about this process. Plus, like screen print it is magical watching the images slowly emerge when you’re rinsing the plate off. We did have one issue with the print and had to toss a plate and start again.
