We spent the day wandering Virginia City, letting the history lead the way. From walking through the mines beneath town to stepping inside saloons and shops that have been standing since the Comstock days, it was one of those places that shaped American History.
Virginia City wears its past out in the open. The stories are layered into the buildings, the boardwalks, and the hillsides around it. This was all about spending a full day learning how a boomtown shaped Nevada.

👇DETAILS & BEST STOPS👇
This is probably my new favorite road trip but it’s important to plan ahead! If you don’t, you could end up broken down with no one in sight, or could miss the best spots. - @sarahwoodardtravels
⏰How long it takes⏰
This is the Nevada portion of Highway 50. Driving the road end-to-end only takes about 5 hours, but with SO MANY stops along the way, I think 3 days is the right amount of time. I only gave it 2 days and had to make a lot of hard decisions about what to skip :(
👷🏻♀️Safety tips👷🏻♀️
Because the road can be desolate, it’s important to make sure your car is in good condition, have water and food, and have a plan if you get a flat tire or need to be towed. Flag gas stations on the map and make sure to fill up when you pass them.
🏞Best stops🏞
There are so many good places to stop on this trip! Here are my top recommendations, that you can find and flag in Google Maps:
- Great Basin National Park
- Baker and the Stargazer and Bristlecone General Store
- Ely to ride the champagne & stars train ride and see the US 50 sign
- Eureka
- The Shoe Tree
- Jackson House Hotel
- Spencer Hot Springs
- Austin for an overnight and a little shopping
- Sand Mountain sand dunes
- Republic of Molossia
- Virginia City
- The Kit Carson Trail
🌱Leave no trace🌱
When you hike to the sand dunes, hot springs, national park, or anywhere outdoors, be sure to treat the area and wildlife with respect, dispose of waste properly, and leave it better than you found it.

Hey Montana! The owners of the Yellowstone Club and the sleazy lobbyists for billionaires and data centers are doing it again.
🚩They pulled a hostile takeover of the Crazy Mountains, ruined the Gallatin River, and are working to seize Virginia City.
Now they are trying to own Flathead Lake and have a meeting with county commissioners early tomorrow morning (Tues 2/3 at 8:45am) with little notice to build a ➡️luxury marina!⬅️
The fix must be in since the construction materials are already on site before they have approval.
We have to stop the power of their lobbyists before we lose Montana‼️
Not a resident of Flathead County? Weigh in anyway and tell the commissioners we’re all tired of elected officials selling off Montana.
Spread the word to friends in the Flathead to show up!
One of the groups in Montana standing up against billionaires is the Flathead Lakers. Help support their work! And spread the word!

I always love being in Virginia City, which sprang up in Nevada virtually overnight with the discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859. This vibrant town is an incredible tourist destination. I’ll continue to make sure rural communities like this get the resources and support they need.
