While Tybee is famous for sea turtles, the focus today was on our terrestrial neighbors. Visit Tybee tagged along with the Tybee Island Marine Science Center and other local volunteers for a box turtle rescue mission at North Beach. With construction on the new Eco Park beginning Monday near Polk Street, teams worked to relocate these residents before work began. Box turtles are a vital part of the island experience but face significant challenges from habitat loss. The mission resulted in five turtles being safely transported to Oatland Island Wildlife Center for temporary relocation. They will return once their new habitat is complete. Thank you to the biologists and neighbors who spent their Friday protecting these local animals!

Long before it was a beach town, the Euchee Tribes called this island home, naming it Tybee, which means "salt!" It has survived centuries of storms, wars, and many many visitors who have been determined to make it a playground.
