A quick glimpse into some of my favorite spreads from my second sketchbook (2022-2023) ✨ I feel like this was when I really started to use my sketchbook as a way to keep track of what I was doing. I committed to the practice of immortalizing certain meals, trips, people, and places on paper instead of on a phone. This sketchbook has become a memory bank, a Time Machine, a visual story of a life (hopefully) well lived. I relish the idea of opening it up years from now to not only see how much I’ve changed artistically, but to reminisce about all the things I’ve loved. The best part about this is that there are zero stakes involved and drawing for its own sake feels soooo good. I’d rather make bad art than nothing at all. Making “bad” art is not a failure. It doesn’t have to be pretty, perfect, or even good. Some days it feels messy. Some days it feels random. But it still means something. It’s a way to express myself… and how I see the world. It’s so easy to compare yourself to others and feel like you’re not enough. This September I’ll be in Italy teaching at an art retreat in the most enchanting of places @le_mole_sul_farfa. I can hardly believe the time has nearly come!!! Last year, they invited me over to do a residency to take in the scenery and enjoy the guesthouse (this was INCREDIBLE) and together we planned the best possible retreat. I’m so proud of what we’ve organised together and can’t wait to go out for this event of a lifetime. The visual journal above is the sketchbook I used while out there, from the airport, flying out to being in Mompeo and Rome and then flying back home. I filled it up with maps, journaling, lettering, recipes, observational notes, landscapes, colour swatching. Such joy!!! Thanks again @pithsupply for gifting me this lovely sketchbook. It was the perfect size and page thickness for all the fun and experiments I needed to include. looking through my journal pages from 2020 to now, i realized i’ve lost a little of the whimsy i used to have. part of me misses it and wants to find my way back while another part is happy with the art i’ve grown into. i think i want to make room for both. i want to keep learning and growing but i also want to leave a little more space for play, for silly little drawings, for making things just because i feel like it. it’s my journal, after all. it can be a little bit of everything. it’s a strange feeling, no? outgrowing who you used to be while still trying to make sense of who you’re becoming. a few years of figuring it out and i think i still am ♡
