POV you hiked 8 miles to rediscover an ancient native Cahuilla settlement in Southern California! Found this place marked on a vague 20 year old cultural resources evaluation. More to find! #SoCal #native #discover #explorer #hiking
Skąd Aztekowie wzięli się w New Mexico w USA? Oczywiście nigdy tutaj nie żyli. To Hiszpańscy osadnicy błędnie nazwali miejsce zamieszkania przodków ludności Pueblo, a nazwa pozostała do dziś, wraz z najlepiej zachowanymi ruinami budowli plemienia Chacoan powstałymi między XI a XIII wiekiem. Ruiny rozciągają sie poza oficjalny obszar miejsca monumentu, co świadczy o zorganizowanej społeczności, która nie wiadomo z jakichś przyczyn porzuciła to wszystko.
Czy warto odwiedzić to miejsce? Jest to ciekawa wyprawa w przeszłość i osoby szukające historii mają okazję do poznania życia i dziedzictwa kulturowego przodków dzisiejszych rdzennych Amerykanów.
Where did the Aztecs come from in New Mexico, USA? Of course, they never lived here. It was the Spanish settlers who mistakenly named the home of the ancestors of the Pueblo population, and the name has been preserved to this day along with the best preserved ruins of the Chacoan tribe, built between the 11th and 13th centuries. The ruins extend beyond the official area of the monument site, which testifies to an organized community that has abandoned it all for some reason.
Is it worth visiting this place? I think history seekers have an opportunity to learn about the life and cultural heritage of the ancestors of today's Native Americans.

For the life of me I could not figure out the purpose of this cool circular structure? Too small to be a kiva. Not protected enough to be a granary. Not the right shape for a dwelling. Any guesses?❤️🪶😃. #native #Pueblo #navajo #newmexico #dinodoug

THE PLAQUE READS:
Dating prior to the 1860s, the Wassama Roundhouse was reconstructed in 1985 on the location of the previous four houses. In 1903, the third roundhouse was built using portions of the center pole from the two earlier houses. The roundhouse served as the focal point of spiritual and ceremonial life for many Native Californians. The Wassama Roundhouse continues to serve this purpose.

Pueblo Bonito is the largest great house in Chaco Canyon, built between A.D. 850–1250 as part of a vibrant ancestral Pueblo landscape.
But Chaco is not a “lost” civilization.
Pueblo descendant communities still honor and visit this living cultural landscape. They remain deeply connected to it.

Tsankawi historic landmark in Los Alamos, New Mexico from my trip a few weeks ago. See my earlier NM post for the main Bandelier monument, which was fantastic to see. Alcove house and ancestral Pueblo dwellings, frijoles canyon.
Bandelier, the anthropologist whose work found and preserved this monument said: “The grandest thing I ever saw.”
Here is part of the Bandelier National Monument’s Tsankawi unit. Such an interesting trail along a 15th century mesa, past a petroglyph, narrow trenches and pathways, climbing up ladders to plateaus, views to the ancestral pueblo village. Loved this visit to end New Mexico travels and wonderful visit with my parents a few weeks ago.

Built over 800 years ago by the Ancestral Pueblo people, the Cliff Palace of Mesa Verde National Park isn’t just the largest cliff dwelling in North America — it’s one of the most astonishing archaeological achievements anywhere on the continent.
More than 150 rooms, 23 kivas, and a perfectly engineered stone city tucked into a sandstone alcove, all constructed without metal tools, wheels, or draft animals. Every wall, doorway, and ceremonial space tells a story of community, innovation, and deep connection to the land.
What makes Cliff Palace so extraordinary isn’t just its scale — it’s its preservation. You’re not looking at ruins scattered by time; you’re standing face-to-face with a place where people lived, gathered, worshiped, and thrived for generations.
If North America has an archaeological crown jewel, this might be it. A reminder that long before modern cities, there were master builders, astronomers, engineers, and storytellers shaping this landscape. And their legacy is still here.
