Defeated. Requiem (1879) by Vasily Vereshchagin
Vasily Vereshchagin, one of Russia’s most fearless war artists, painted not for praise but for truth. In Defeated. Requiem, he shows us what most nations hide. Not the flags, not the parades, not the songs of victory—but the silence of the dead.
No generals lead these men. No kings honor them. They are led only by crows circling overhead.
The battlefield is covered in snow. Frozen corpses lie scattered, nameless and forgotten. The silence is loud. There are no survivors here. No hymns, no glory, only the eternal quiet of death. This is the requiem—the final song—for the defeated.
Vereshchagin had seen war firsthand. He marched with soldiers. He stood where the bodies fell. And when he painted this, he painted what he remembered. This is not imagination. This is memory.
The Church bells do not toll for them. The snow is their shroud. The wind is their prayer. And the crows, black and solemn, are the only ones who remain.

THE WHEEL OF WAR
Another sleepless night of fear. As my eyes went heavy in the dark of the local parking lot, I had a vivid dream, in which the sounds of explosions above merged into the starry night, coming, bouncy and all echo, as a massive wheel. Bloody was its trace.
And I woke up to find out my period got out of control because of stress and I was bleeding too. Had neither extra pads nor a toilet or whatever in that improvised parking shelter. Bled to my knees until I got home.
