Rick Rubin uses Andy Warhol to make a powerful point about AI and creativity.
Warhol did not personally create every physical part of every famous artwork.
He developed the idea, gave direction, and had other people execute parts of the process. Yet the finished work is still recognized as Andy Warhol’s art.
The argument is that creativity lives in the idea and the vision, not simply in who physically performs every step.
That idea has huge implications for AI-generated art.
If a person develops the concept, directs the AI, experiments with prompts, selects the result, and shapes the final work, where exactly does the creativity belong?
AI may change how art is produced without necessarily eliminating the human idea behind it.
As part of our debut collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation – silkscreen collectables of Warhol’s original ‘Brillo Box’ sculptures — we were honoured to speak with a key member of Warhol’s inner circle.
Paige Powell (@paigepowellofficial) is an American photographer, curator, art consultant, and animal rights activist. She began working at Warhol’s Interview Magazine in the 80s, quickly becoming a key fixture of the NYC art scene and a close personal friend of the artist.
The interview grants a rare glimpse into Powell’s incredible archive of photographs from the period, as well as her invaluable insight into the mind of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

With huge thanks to Thomas Lauderdale of @pinkmartini for conducting the interview.

I turned Andy Warhol into a robot. 🤖
Meet POPBOTIX — my new kinetic sculpture: tin-toy limbs, a Brillo-box torso, and Warhol himself on top. His arms move, his head turns, and his eyes light up red.
Seeing him in person hits different. Come meet him at @krausegallery — opening Nov 14 in NYC, and I’ll be there.
Would Warhol have loved or hated becoming a robot? 👇

Andy Warhol was an iconic American artist whose career intersected with the pop art movement in the 1960s. He became famously known for his works featuring Campbell's Soup Cans, Marilyn Monroe silkscreens, and Coke bottles. Throughout his life and career, Warhol blurred the line between commercial art and traditional fine art, ultimately turning commercial success into a form of artistic expression. The video clip features a conversation between Warhol and a real estate agent at a party. The agent asks Warhol what he does, to which Warhol replies, "I'm an artist." When the agent asks what he makes, Warhol responds, "Anything I can sell. Making money is art." This quote highlights Warhol's perspective on the commercialization of art and the monetization of his work, aligning with the concept of pop art, which embraces popular culture and consumerism.

Fandil som mu, pretože Andy Warhol si to zaslúži.
🎞️ In 1975, Warhol developed a ground-breaking technique in which he used blocks of coloured graphic art paper with halftone and his own expressive drawn line to produce a collage-like effect.

Andy Warhol famously stated in his 1975 book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol that “making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art”
Most people think you have to choose between making money and making art. Andy Warhol never saw the difference.
In The Apprentice, a young real estate developer asks Warhol what he creates. His answer is simple: anything he can sell. Then comes the idea that defined much of his career: making money is art.
Warhol understood commerce long before he became one of the most recognizable artists in the world. He began as a commercial illustrator drawing advertisements, later called his studio “The Factory,” reproduced the same images repeatedly, published a magazine, and accepted commissioned portraits for fixed prices.
Decades later, the market reinforced that idea. In 2022, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn sold at Christie’s for $195 million, setting an auction record for an American artist.
Andy Warhol once lived with nearly 25 Siamese cats—and named almost every one of them the same thing. 😹🎨
