Rumors about a possible discontinuation started circulating around January, and since then prices have climbed sharply. If you look at the Chrono24 chart, the spike becomes very noticeable right after those rumors began.
Back in January the average price was around $23,000. Today, the highest listing I can currently see on Chrono24 is about $42,500, which represents roughly an 85% increase in a matter of months.
Speculation ahead of Watches and Wonders Geneva in April seems to be driving collectors to secure one before any official announcement.
Whether the rumors end up being true or not, this is another example of how quickly the market can react when a popular Rolex reference is rumored to disappear. ⏱️
