The President was Andrew Jackson, The city of Washington, D.C. was still muddy roads, gas lamps, and horses. The population of the entire U.S. was just 13 million. There were no telephones, no electricity, no typewriters, no indoor plumbing.
Books like these were read by candlelight. 🕯️
In the world of literature & publishing, Sir Walter Scott was the world’s first celebrity novelist. Before Dickens, before Tolstoy, Scott was the literary giant.
These “Waverley Novels” were sold on subscription. People waited for each installment the way we wait for Netflix episodes to drop. In 1831, a complete matched set of Scott’s works cost as much as a month’s wages for a household servant.
Theses were printed when collectors still rode in horse-drawn coaches. Photography didn’t exist yet (Daguerre invented it 8 years later) & the average lifespan was 37.
The leather bindings predate the Civil War & have survived almost 200 years.
