Elk will never return to where they were before the wolf reintroduction in Western Montana and the northern half of Idaho. That’s just a simple fact of the matter. Well, that is for the Allred doing the best that they have since the introduction and continue to climb a population every year in my experience. Basins that I used to see a lot of deer end. I don’t see near as many deer now but I see a lot more elk. There’s no gurantee for the future but right now things are looking great so get out and hunt so you can talk to your kids about the good old days instead of wishing you were there.

Everyone says wolves wiped out the elk in Idaho and Montana. But the reality is a lot more complicated than that. In many places elk populations are actually higher today than they were before wolf reintroduction. So why do so many hunters think elk numbers are down? Because the behavior of elk has completely changed. Twenty years ago you could sit one meadow, one ridge, or one wallow and eventually elk would walk out. That’s not how it works anymore. Elk move more. They relocate faster. They bunch up in pockets. Wolves didn’t eliminate elk in most areas… They changed the game. The hunters who are still hunting like it’s 2005 are the ones who think elk disappeared. The hunters who cover ground, find pockets, and adapt are still killing elk every year. Curious what everyone else is seeing out there.
