Let’s talk about one of the most pervasive scams in yachting.
Every yacht broker you’ll ever meet has a story about the time a guy wearing board shorts and a ratty t-shirt showed up at a boat show and ended up being worth a heaping fortune. The lesson being that you should never judge a book by its cover.
But there is a corollary here, and it’s actually far more common. I posted in my stories today an NYMag feature about two con artists gallivanting around the Hamptons and Palm Beach pretending to be a Rockefeller and a Cartier, respectively. Those kind of people are a dime a dozen in the yachting industry. On a regular basis, people will show up dressed like potential buyers—likely fake Rolexes and Gucci handbags—and pretend to want to buy a yacht. They’ll take sales calls, go to showings, and consume as much free food and drink at boat shows as they can. But in the end, when it comes time to put pen to paper and actually show the money they claim to have, they either come up with w cockamamie excuse why they aren’t ready to buy, or simply just disappear altogether. It is a total waste of time for the hardworking people in this industry, and there is no real way to sift through the swindlers. You just have to play along until the sneaking suspicions in your head become too loud to ignore.
And the crazy part about it is, the con artists stand to gain nothing. There’s no pot of gold for them at the end of the scam. Maybe they see some big boats and get some free Champagne out of the charade, and that’s it. If you know of any benefit to this ruse, please drop it in the comments.
I would bet dollars to donuts that there are a few of these people reading this caption right now. So let me just say, you all are, objectively speaking, gigantic losers. And I sincerely hope you get the help of which you are so sorely in need.
