Yaxel Lendeborg is one of the most impactful players in college basketball right now. Known for his size, versatility, and all-around game, he can score, rebound, defend, and even handle the ball like a guard at times.
Playing for the Michigan Wolverines, he became a breakout star this season and helped lead them deep into the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the Final Four and ultimately a national championship season performance.
What makes him stand out is how complete his game is—he doesn’t just do one thing. He impacts winning in every area: defense, rebounding, passing, and scoring when needed.
Lendeborg’s rise is all about growth and opportunity, going from a lesser-known recruit to one of the most talked-about players in college basketball.

Yaxel Lendeborg is NOT 35. A little old for a college player at 23, though, he only started playing organized basketball at 15 and only got serious about it at 18, so his age makes sense. To understand his unselfish style of play, his comments to the media, and his amazing mom in the stands, you have to know where he started out. More interesting facts about Yaxel:
🏀He was born in Puerto Rico, moved to the Dominican Republic and then Ohio before spending the second half of his childhood in New Jersey.
🏀His coach describes him as: “Pure and genuine. He doesn’t know how to use coachspeak. He doesn’t know how to use playerspeak. He just speaks from the heart all the time.”
🏀About his teammates, he says, “They’re always doing things that make me want to work even harder just to stay at their level.” In warmups, he often wears his teammates’ jerseys to show them love. And his coach says: “[The rest of the team have] encouraged him to be more aggressive, to shoot more, to hunt some more individual accolades all year, and he simply refused because he didn’t care about any of those things.”
🏀He claims Kentucky offered him $7-9 million, but he turned them down for Michigan because money didn’t matter to him since he’d already made more than he even imagined. What mattered was a program where he felt like he’d grow as a player to get NBA-ready.
