Yu Nishimura’s Dreamlike Debut at Sadie Coles HQ 🌻
Yu Nishimura’s Synopsis marks his debut exhibition in the UK at Sadie Coles HQ. The Japanese artist reflects on everyday life through serene portraits of family, friends, and tranquil landscapes. His soft palette and delicate brushwork lend his work a dreamlike quality, transforming mundane moments into something profound and moving. The exhibition captures fleeting, everyday moments—walking among flowers, collecting shells on a shoreline, or simply contemplating the quiet rhythm of life. Nishimura’s ability to combine traditional techniques with contemporary influences offers a fresh perspective on the beauty of the ordinary.

His paintings are of quiet solitude, but his art market is anything but. Since 2025, Yu Nishimura has seen his artwork prices go from thousands to a record of $1 million in May. His success has been punctuated by the announcement in May 2025 that he was signed by the mega gallery David Zwirner. But this is more than just speculation, I think anyway who’s seen his show on at Sadie Coles in London at the moment can attest to how lush and rich (no pun intended) his paintings can be.
Who should I look at next for this series?

Yu Nishimura (b. 1982) is a contemporary painter known for his atmospheric works that explore memory, time and everyday life. Using delicate layers of oil paint and tempera, he creates hazy scenes that blur the boundaries between observation and recollection, transforming ordinary moments into contemplative and quite images.
In Dislocation @sadiecoleshq Nishimura’s paintings focused on shifting perception and unstable space. Figures and landscapes appear fragmented and in-between, as if pulled from memory rather than direct observation. Through layered brushwork and subtle distortions, the works create a sense of dislocation where images feel both familiar and unsettled.

How does our very own visual memory impact the way we experience art?
I visited Yu Nishimura’s solo exhibition “Dislocation“ at @sadiecoleshq in London. I thought I came to see one of Japan’s fastest rising art market stars, but instead I found myself journeying down memory lane.
The quiet emotional weight in Nishimura’s paintings somehow reminds me of Fumi Saimon (柴門ふみ), the manga artist behind some of the urban romance classics such as “Tokyo Love Story” (first published in 1988, Nishimura was born in 1982).
Growing up I was obsessed with Saimon’s work, amazed by just how she managed to convey such emotional depth in simple lines.
Of course, Nishimura isn’t painting manga. The medium is completely different, but the emotional resonance is there.
Today, his work is among the most sought-after in the market. His latest auction record rose by 40% in just six months (hammer price data from LiveArt in video, sale price achieved at Sotheby’s New York was $998,400 in May 2026), and one of his paintings (“boy”, 2023, pic in video) is now in the collection of the Centre Pompidou.
But these are the headlines. They don’t define our experience of the work.
Every painting is filtered through the viewer’s own visual archive.
In this case, I trust my own visual memory.
