(Esp en comentarios 👇🏽) It’s been 5 months since we found and rehabilitated the orphaned opossum that stole our hearts. We named her Kua. Just like many of you, I was also raised to see opossums as pests. Animals we did not want around. I was told they were aggressive, dirty and played no role in nature. Little does the world know! People honestly have NO education on opossums. Neither did we, until we found Kua and began doing our own research. Let’s clarify a few things, shall we? 🌿They are NOT rats. They are marsupials. Yes, they are related to kangaroos. 🌿They are not aggressive. They only show teeth when scared. 🌿They are crucial to nature for they are pollinators. 🌿They carry less diseases than dogs. 🌿They randomly get rabies because the virus doesn’t survive the low temperature of their bodies. 🌿Each opossum eats around 7000 ticks every year preventing the spread of diseases. 🌿They are actually very clean. Kua licks herself after every meal, loves playing in water bowls, and smells better than our bathed dogs! Now, important: ‼️Baby opossums do NOT eat cow’s milk or fruits. The wrong foods can kill them. They need a very detailed diet that involves a blended formula of puppy milk powder 🐶, vitamins, the shell of a boiled egg, ginger water and more. As they grow, their diet changes. Kua now eats a blended diet of boiled vegetables, and animal protein. (We are vegan, opossums are not.) ‼️As babies, they need to be feed every 2-3 hours and stimulated right after so they can pee and poop until they are old enough to do so on their own. ‼️As babies, their bodies need to be kept warm with blankets and a heater nearby. ‼️If you find one, take them directly to a wildlife center. Unfortunately, the one in our town was not accepting more opossums so Kua became a part of our family. 🌿 And, always, please educate yourselves. Ask wildlife experts. Please share this and tag others so we continue to educate the world and begin protecting opossums more. 🫶🏽 #opossum #tlacuache #rescue #fyp #zarigueya
