Mycena cf. capillaris

Very photogenic pair! Found growing gregariously on oak leaf litter.

Rickenella sp.

Probably one of my favourite agarics.

It is one of the few agaric genera of the Hymenochaetales (the same order as Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)). This group of agaricoid Hymenochaetales is referred to as the rickenelloid clade.

Interestingly, these fungi likely evolved the “cap-stem-gills” morphology independently of most mushrooms (Agaricales).

This is a great example of how morphological similarities among fungi do not necessarily imply monophyly.

Mushroom hug!

First shots in Tübingen :)

Rhizomarasmius sp. Will be nice to get this under the scope. The caulocystidia (sterile stipe cells/stipe fuzz) are nicely revealed here.

Coral mushroom hands saying hello👋
Looks like Artomyces sp.
Not sure what species.

Specimen was approx. 4-5cm tall

Unadulterated mushroom joy!

Me and @ryan_isenor20 came across some gorgeous Lactarius indigo today. Like all Lactarius, it exudes latex when damaged, but in this case, it is a breath taking blue.

Thank you to everyone that came to a fantastic mushroom walk last night. Great people and lots of fungi! Can’t ask for anything better! by @taigamushrooms

Hey everyone!

So I’m moving away from Thunder Bay, Ontario this fall to pursue a PhD studying mycology in Tübingen, Germany🇩🇪. I’ll be gone for a number of years.

Before I go, it’d be great to get out with the public and nerd out about mushroom diversity, evolution, and ecology. I’m not sure how many folks will show up, so this is an opportunity for like minded people to get together, share knowledge, and learn. This isn’t a walk where foraging will be the main focus, but will surely be discussed.

The mushrooms have been quite happy with all this rain. Hope to see you there! No sign up required. Let’s hang out! by @taigamushrooms

Being responsible stewards means staying at the forefront of research into the fascinating and complex life cycles of these incredible organisms.

That’s why we’re proud to have experts like Ben ( @taigamushrooms )on our team, bringing deep knowledge and leading research to better understand Chaga’s intricate life cycle.

It’s an exciting time for fungi, and we’re inspired by where the science is taking us. by @taigamushrooms

The closest thing you’ll get to a fungal water balloon 🎈

Stumbled across a prolific patch of Sarcosoma globosum ascomata! These definitely take the cake as my favourite boreal spring fungus. So fun! Their morphology is well described, but poorly understood from a mechanistic standpoint. It’d be interesting to do a deep dive into this taxon in my career.

In this region, I’ve generally found them in lowland spruce stands with lots of moss and moisture shortly after snowmelt.

With so much misconception in the industry around things like fruiting body vs mycelium, we want to elevate conversations with researchers, scientists and thought leaders.

That's why we've brought @taigamushrooms on our first episode to talk all things chaga, Ben is a researcher and expert on chaga's reproductive cycle in particular and he brings a wealth of knowledge to our team.

We're in exciting times for the industry where we are seeing the focus on research and validation grow everyday.

As part of that initiative we're grateful to have people like Ben @taigamushrooms on our team, bringing his wealth of knowledge on chaga to our efforts to elevate the science behind these amazing fungi.

Stay tuned for our podcast with Ben where we go over the state of study and talk in depth with him about his thesis. by @taigamushrooms
