Throwback | October 2026 | Arthshila Santiniketan

October at Arthshila Santiniketan opened conversations across music, literature, cinema, theatre and architecture, examining how ideas travel across cultures, generations and artistic practices.

Questions of freedom, identity and creative expression ran through the month’s programmes. From the influence of Indian traditions on jazz to the intellectual exchanges between Gandhi and Tagore, these encounters revealed how artistic and political thought develop through dialogue. Literature and cinema offered perspectives on truth, imagination and artistic practice, while theatre brought historical narratives to contemporary audiences.

The ongoing exhibition Gandhi’s Dwelling extended these reflections into the built environment, exploring how spaces embody ideas, values and ways of living. Together, the programmes encouraged audiences to revisit familiar histories and consider their continuing relevance.

Throwback | October 2026 | Arthshila Ahmedabad

October at Arthshila Ahmedabad brought together literature, cinema, architecture and cultural histories through a series of conversations, screenings and exhibitions. The programmes explored how people relate to their families, communities, environments and inherited traditions.

The month featured a book talk with Susannah Dickey on her novel Into the Wreck, exploring family relationships, grief and the complexities of belonging. In collaboration with ALT EFF, screenings of Mulsotan – The Rooted and Orans of Rajasthan: A Sacred Oasis at the Cusp of Change drew attention to ancestral land rights, ecological conservation and communities' relationships with nature. A lecture by Sahara Cassim traced the migratory journeys and cultural heritage of Gujarati communities in Réunion, particularly the Zarabs and Karanes. The opening of Hyperlocal: Architecture of the Immediate brought architectural practices into conversation with local contexts, materials and cultural identities through an exhibition walkthrough and interactive session.

Together, these programmes created opportunities for artists, writers, architects, researchers and audiences to exchange perspectives across disciplines. Through literature, film, historical inquiry and design, October's gatherings encouraged reflections on the places, relationships and cultural practices that shape everyday life.

Throwback | October 2026 | Arthshila Delhi

October at Arthshila Delhi brought embroidery into focus as a living inheritance, connecting the work of individual makers with histories shared across communities and generations.

The opening of The Continuing Threadline, the keynote exhibition of Sui Dhaga, invited audiences to consider how cloth carries memories, identities and traditions. Curated by Sujata Prasad and Oroon Das, the exhibition explored craftsmanship alongside the cultural worlds that give embroidery its meaning. Navtej Johar’s somatic response to Arpana Caur’s paintings and Rekha Raj’s renditions of Punjabi Sufinama Kalam extended these encounters through movement, poetry and song. Stories from the Asia Pacific and an exhibition walkthrough offered further perspectives on making and inheritance.

The gathering created space for artists, scholars, craft practitioners and visitors to exchange knowledge and recognise connections across geographies. Through these conversations, embroidery emerged as a practice through which people remember, respond to change and carry their stories forward.

Throwback | October 2026 | Arthshila Goa

October at Arthshila Goa brought together exhibitions, independent cinema, creative writing and conversations, creating opportunities to explore how artistic practices connect personal experiences with wider social questions.

Across the month, programmes moved between ideas of belonging, memory, imagination and community. Layered Realities explored these connections through the works of the Arthshila Fine Arts Fellowship 2025–26 fellows, bringing material histories and changing landscapes into dialogue. Independent films offered encounters with diverse lives and perspectives, including reflections on Anglo-Indian identity and the community’s future. Creative writing encouraged playful experiments with words and performance, while the conversation around Orijit Sen’s practice examined how art engages with public life and political concerns.

Together, these programmes invited audiences to consider how stories take shape, whose experiences they carry and how they open space for different ways of seeing. The month brought viewing, discussion and participation together as shared ways of engaging with art and the world around us.

Seasonal and Sacred: Preserving food through Chhath
Volume 6 | Issue 5 | September 2026

An encounter with a pomelo in Mumbai’s Crawford Market opens a story of seasonal foods, family rituals, and the ecological knowledge preserved through Chhath.

In her essay, Priti Saxena draws on her experiences in a Bihari family to follow the foods and collective labour that sustain the festival. Grinding wheat for thekua, joining women in singing Chhath geet, and preparing offerings for the sun become part of a personal account of devotion and belonging.

At the centre are foods whose cultivation and use remain closely tied to the festival: pomelo, suthani, gamhari rice, and singhara. Their stories connect home gardens and wetlands with the livelihoods of farmers, basket weavers, and potters, while raising questions about their future as tastes change and landscapes disappear.

Out now.
Read patiently. Follow the offerings to the people and landscapes that sustain them.

The Making of Hari Patang Pe Hara Patanga | Allen Shaw
For Allen Shaw, a sketch holds more than a frozen moment. It carries the movement of what he has witnessed and experienced, extending beyond the frame.
In this conversation, Shaw reflects on three decades of sketching and the making of Hari Patang Pe Hara Patanga, an animated short film adapted from a poem that uses playful absurdity to reflect on environmental concerns, political realities and the possibility of hope.
Created in collaboration with @theolddrifter and voiced by Gajraj Rao (@gajrajrao), the film has been officially selected for the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) 2026, where it will have its India and world premiere.

The Process Is the Product | Allen Shaw
For Allen Shaw, the act of making carries its own significance. Sketching, experimenting and allowing a project to take shape are central to how he approaches his practice.
In this conversation, Shaw reflects on his instinctive way of working, the importance of drawing by hand, and how the demands of each project influence the structure and direction of his work.
