Is it really hot flushes?

It’s day one of Menopause Awareness Month, and we want to know what women are actually living with during the menopause transition.

So we took one of our favourite features from TALIA and rebuilt it for everyone. The Global Menopause Symptom Constellation started from published menopause research. Now it’s shaped by every woman who adds her symptoms. It shows up to the 30 most frequently logged, updating in real time, and you can view ‘all’ ages or filter by your own range.

Is it hot flushes? Anxiety? Low libido? It’s fascinating to see the symptoms change across age range and it’s a great reminder that we are not in this alone.

Log yours in a few seconds. Nothing personal is collected, and it’s completely separate from the app.

Send this to friends and other women who you know are in the throes of peri or suspect they might be….

If you’re in the thick of perimenopause or menopause, pick up October’s @topsanteuk . It’s a full menopause special, packed with expert advice and practical information, with @nadiasawalha and Laura Dowling (@fabulouspharmacist) on the cover.

We’re thrilled to be featured and have a mention on the cover and in @thehealtheditor Katy’s column. She was pleased to find clumsiness on the list, 1 of more than 70 symptoms you can track.

And thank you to Adeline for the great article and our users, @charlottebellamyholland and @becmarsala, for talking about their experience. ❤️🙏🏻

On shelves until 23 October.

“How did you know it was perimenopause?”

A woman asked me that quietly at a networking event recently. Mid-forties, teenagers at home, and something I’d said about sleep had made her wonder.

The honest answer? I didn’t. For two years I blamed everything else: the divorce, work, teenagers.

It took two friends to suggest it might be hormones.

Perimenopause affects so many systems in the body that each symptom seems to have its own explanation.

Bad sleep is stress. Snapping at everyone is a busy life. Palpitations are worry. Needing the loo all the time is just getting older.

If something’s made you wonder, start tracking. Log your symptoms each day, how bad they are and what else was going on.

Over a few weeks a pattern starts to show, and you can take it to your doctor.

You don’t need to know it’s perimenopause to start tracking. You track to find out.

Switching off is one of the hardest parts of running a startup.

Two things do it for us. Sea & Sauna. Funnily enough, neither is mobile phone friendly.

What I love is the contrast.

In the sea, it’s joy, adventure and a bit of an adrenaline kick. We dive, swim and jump. Above the surface, the world is loud. Below it, everything is muted. Not silent, just different. If I could have one superpower, it would be breathing underwater.

The sauna is the complete opposite. Evenings or weekends, we go to Soul Sweats, where they combine sauna with a sound and breathwork. No adrenaline, total relaxation.

Above & Below. Action & Calm. Hot and Cold.

There’s a bonus for women, too. You don’t need an ice bath. Stacy T. Sims, PhD explained on Mary Claire Haver, MD’s podcast that because women regulate temperature differently, we can get the benefits of cold water at around 14°C. Outside winter, that’s pretty much the Cornish sea.

Heat counts too. On the same podcast, she talked about regular sauna helping women’s blood pressure and metabolic health.

I can see it in my own tracking in TALIA. When I properly take time out, especially the kind that calms my nervous system, my symptoms ease.

What helps you switch off? Or....what would you choose as your superpower?

**New Feature Live**

Your doctor doesn’t need an app’s opinion. They need your history.

Infection tracking is now live in TALIA. It was an idea from Katy, editor of @topsanteuk , and we knew straight away it would be useful.

There’s a lot of conflicting advice about UTIs and thrush in perimenopause and menopause. TALIA doesn’t pick a side. It isn’t an advice or diagnostic tool. You log what happened, who confirmed it and how it was treated, and it sits next to your symptoms and every change to your HRT. Your doctor sees the pattern and decides how best to treat you.

One infection is a nuisance. But repeated patterns are information your doctor can act on.

Next up: bleeding outside your cycle or after menopause, suggested by a doctor at @pauselive . If you’re having unexpected bleeding now, speak to your doctor.

Is there something you’d like to show your doctor that TALIA doesn’t track yet? Tell us in the comments or DM me.

We spent a long time deciding what to charge for TALIA, often walking up and down the beach talking it through.

It was never going to be free. When a health app costs nothing, you’re usually paying for it some other way.

So the question was what would feel easy for any woman to justify. We were happy with £3.99 a month, or £39.99 a year. One price, the whole tool, with no premium tier holding back the useful bits.

Wherever you get your care, TALIA keeps track of your symptoms and helps you manage your HRT, so you and your doctor can see what’s really going on.

We priced TALIA for every woman.

How does your feed know you’re in perimenopause? 👀

This week the i Paper reported that menopausal women are being targeted by companies selling products with little evidence behind them.

Here’s what most women don’t know. When Peak Privacy tested 10 of the most-used menopause apps, every one sent data to outside companies, including ad networks, the moment it opened. That was before a woman had logged a thing, and before anyone asked her.

That signal tells platforms like this one you’ve opened a menopause app. And “woman in menopause” is a label advertisers pay to reach.

91% of women say that isn’t OK. We agree and thats why we don’t do paid advertising.

We had TALIA tested too. It became the first app of any kind to reach Peak Privacy’s Gold standard, out of well over 1,000 scanned. No ad networks. No trackers.

Track your symptoms, your HRT and your cycle.

Privately. Because your menopause data shouldn’t be someone else’s business.

It was 2017, and I was running a big competition over four days at The Photography Show. In the middle of it, I had to leave and drive to court for a hearing in my divorce. Then I was due on stage.

We’d been teaching photographers about posing and body language at the time, and I’d watched Amy Cuddy’s TED talk about standing in a posture of confidence even when you don’t feel it. So I locked myself in a cubicle in the ladies’ and stood like Superman. I remember looking down at myself and thinking how ridiculous I must have looked.

I gave the talk and got through it. Afterwards I asked myself whether any of this was worth it. What I didn’t ask was whether something else was going on.

Two friends in the thick of perimenopause could see I wasn’t myself and guessed hormones long before I did. Once I stopped explaining everything away, I was kinder to myself.

Some days I still get a knot of anxiety in my chest with no obvious cause. The difference now is I don’t go looking for a reason. I acknowledge it and get on with my day.

Your experience and how it arrives is vital information. Log it as it happens: how you feel, when, and what else was going on. Patients are bad historians, especially when you’re anxious and exhausted. A record is what gives you and your doctor the full picture.

What a day @pauselive. We’ve had so many brilliant conversations: women navigating menopause, nurses, doctors, coaches, fitness instructors, and of course our fellow exhibitors.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the TALIA stand to chat, share their story or try our #menopauseapp

We have so much to follow up on and new features to plan!

Wine, it’s not you, it’s me.

Actually, it’s my hormones.

Coffee and I are still close, but we don’t generally hang out past lunchtime.

Let me introduce you to your new best friend: TALIA. Great listener. Never judges. Remembers everything, so you don’t have to. Happy to hear about the 3am wake-ups, the hot flushes, the painful sex, the vanished libido and the mornings after a night with wine.

Always there for you. Never gossips. Got your back through the whole midlife transition. And cheaper than the other two.

Focus on Symptom, HRT & Period Tracking

3 things TALIA does, and why they matter:

1. Symptom Tracking
If you’re over 45, there’s often no blood test for perimenopause. Your doctor goes on what you tell them, so the clearer your record, the better the conversation.

2. HRT Management
Gels, patches, pessaries, different days, different times. I still forget. TALIA reminds you, keeps track of your supplies and shows you where to rotate your patch or gel.

3. Period Tracking
Periods coming earlier or later than usual can be one of the first signs of perimenopause, often years before they stop. You’ll only see the pattern change if you’re keeping track.

Not on HRT? No periods any more? Turn features on and off as you need them, so TALIA only shows what’s relevant to you.

Now on iPhone and Android. Links to download in bio.

Which one would help you most? Save this, or send it to a friend who’s just started HRT.
