From classroom to real-world impact.

Drs. Melanie Kinskey and Benjamin Herman of our Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture are leading efforts to connect K–12 students with real-world transportation challenges by developing engaging, hands-on curricula for local schools.

That work came to life when fourth-grade students from @bryan.isd's Houston Elementary wrapped up their sediment and erosion unit with a field trip to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute's (@ttitamu) Sediment and Erosion Control Lab at Texas A&M's @relliscampus.

With the help of TTI experts and preservice Aggie teachers, students explored erosion control through hands-on testing and gained a better understanding of the concepts they learned in class.

This partnership showcases the power of collaboration in expanding opportunities for young learners while preparing the next generation of educators.

From Aggieland to Capitol Hill.

Students in our Haynes Teacher Corps stepped out of the classroom and traveled to Washington, D.C. They toured the U.S. Capitol and other landmarks, met with Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, observed the legislative process in action and explored how policy, advocacy and public service intersect with their future roles as educators.

More than anything, students discovered the power of their voice.

“The biggest lesson I learned was the importance of citizens speaking out about their needs,” student Ella Valdez said.

“As future teachers, we need to be involved so policies truly serve students.”

Experiences like these are at the heart of the Haynes Teacher Corps, developing aspiring educators into teacher-citizen leaders prepared to lead with integrity, serve their communities and drive positive change in schools and society.
