I wasn’t able to write my fantasy novel until I practiced being embarrassed. For me, that embarrassment was first with just myself. NO ONE else was reading what I wrote.

I had a lot of expectations that I put on myself before I even put my fingers to the keyboard. What if I write something that offends someone? What if it’s too vulgar? What if it’s too explicit? What if it disappoints people? What will so and so think if I wrote this? Those were just some of the anxious thoughts that bumped around in my head, making me doubt I could write before I even started.

So I took a deep breath and asked myself a question.

What do I want to write?

Not what other people expect me to write, not what I think I should write...but what do I want to write?

Then I gave myself permission to embarrass myself. I challenged myself to write an explicit sex scene. A dark scene that explored abuse. A scene of a woman on a journey to herself, that experiences self love and self pleasure for the first time ever. I let myself use language that I don’t normally use to express emotion and help me explore what it’s like to be someone else.

These challenges taught me something really important.

That I can write whatever the f*ck I want.

If writing isn’t political, then why did I make my FMC into a badass dragon shifter ?! Just for looks?! HA!
She helps takes down evil and corrupt rulers and drug and sex trafficking rings all while healing from her own trauma and raising a daughter.

I have a confession to make.
I don’t actually write my own books.
🫣 I know! But it’s not what you’re thinking!

I’ve always loved writing. It helps me process emotions and events and has been a way for me to communicate complicated things. My love for writing paired with an active imagination has allowed me to write a fantasy novel, a paranormal novelette, and so many things that will stay buried in my documents folder 😅

Whether it’s a letter, in my journal, or fiction writing has been a big component in my healing and growth as a person!
