Painting glass today - detail of a replica of Van der Ast's marvellous Zomerschoon tulip painting from 1625, as requested by a US customer following his visit to Holland. This commission has been a great way to learn more about the tricks of the 1620s - for example, the illusion of glass can be enhanced by partially layering a thin veil of lapis lazuli on top. Might steal his water droplets too.

Quince painting time is upon us! @catherinephipps was so kind to cut a branch full of quince off her tree for me and I can't wait to paint them.

But first I need to live with them for a bit to understand and feel them. I'm first observing how they go from a bright plumpy yellow to showing decay. I love seeing blemishes and ugly things on fruit as they gain a personality - they've been through something. I find them more beautiful with every passing day. Bring on the ugliness ❤️

Reposting this from 2025 - a US customer asked me to paint a replica of Van der Ast's painting of a Zomerschoon tulip (1625), which is in the Mauritshuis in the Hague, as a reminder of his holiday in The Netherlands. A great project as I grow this monumental tulip (first documented in 1620) in my garden (well, it flowered twice), I have visited this painting a number of times as it is so beautiful, and I routinely use the pigments Van der Ast used to paint his painting. To complete the work I also had the frame reproduced, and the result made my customer very happy. I'm quite proud of how this all came together!

The great replica frame was produced by @kingswoodframes - thanks a million!
