Pōneke we will have you in our hearts forever. Please swipe to see some snippets of our recent tour that took us to Paekākāriki and Wellington. We connected with lots of beautiful humans, shared stage with a beautiful kapa haka group, played topless for an audience that didn’t fear the rain, ate the most yummy food… to all of you, people and places that received and welcomed us, Ngā mihi, Gracias, Thank you.

Suena Oro, a te reo Māori/Spanish fusion band from Whakatū/Nelson are bringing their psychedelic sonic experience to Pōneke on their ‘Te Heke Tō Taura Kōrari’ tour.
Whakatu’s fertile music scene has been ignited by Suena Oro’s hypnotic extended jams that touch on folk, reggae, drone-music and other broad genres, all the while keeping experimentation, improvisation and taonga pūoro at the core.

Suena Oro’s original songs draw inspiration from tangata whenuatanga, a rich depth of Spanish heritage and many years of experience at the coalface of various musical forms. The songs are vehicles for political and humanist perspectives riding dance-orientated grooves. Kanikani mai!

These treasures, which were both given to us by Brian Flintoff over the years, have guided our journeys into the world of Taonga Pūoro. Learning the languages to activate their voices, the warmth with which to nurture their bodies - this has been a journey inward as much as an exploration outward.

These treasures, too, will guide us as we take our music to Pōneke in the coming weeks. Visit us along the tour and you can hear the stories of these instruments' names, sung in their own voices.
