Yesterday, we held our first HODs’ meeting of the year. As part of the session, I asked each Head of Department to share a brief reflection on 2025 the progress made last year and what they intend to improve or scale this year.

After everyone shared, I rounded up the meeting as the HR Lead and host, reflecting on my own department’s journey and what we’re looking to achieve in the year ahead.

In that moment, I felt genuinely happy, confident, and proud of myself. Being the sole HR professional in a growing startup, I was able to contribute meaningfully to building structure, culture, and systems that did not previously exist.

Over the past year, I:
• Helped establish a clearer organizational structure and people-focused initiatives that strengthened collaboration and engagement
• Created platforms that encouraged staff participation, leadership, and confidence beyond their core roles
• Built foundational HR frameworks and policies from scratch to guide ethics, conduct, and operations
• Implemented structured leave and welfare processes in an environment where none previously existed
• Designed a career and progression framework to support growth, alignment, and fairness
• Supported the deployment of digital HR processes in collaboration with the tech team
• Led recruitment, employee relations, and exits with minimal disruption and no legal exposure
• Ensured employee welfare and retention, closing the year with very minimal attrition

There is so much more behind the scenes, but what stood out most to me was realizing how much my capacity has stretched and expanded.

So yes, I gave myself a quiet round of applause.

Toluwalase, I’m proud of you.

If you have tasted this chef T Burger King rice before please, how did you feel about it. I believe if I cook at home, I can do better than this.
