Despite what the internet’s romanticization of Autism will have you believe, living with it is not always easy. I love who I am, but Autism can be profoundly disabling. I have spent countless years crying alone, wondering why people treated me differently, why they looked at me like a freak when I dared to take up space or make my presence known. I was a bright, kind, and happy kid, eager to be friends with everyone. But my earliest memories are of exclusion and ridicule, and I still face it to this day. From school, to sports, to work, I have been bullied out of spaces for traits that result from an uncontrollable developmental difference in my brain. Even as an adult, I continue to be treated poorly, and to be excluded before people even have a chance to get to know me. I have been told my whole life that I am difficult. I have to listen to people romanticize autistic traits, like “vocal stimming” and “overstimulation.” But if they truly knew what it was like to experience those things, they would not throw the terms around so lightly. If they saw me unmasked and stimming, they would mock me more than they already do. Despite this, I have found people who love me as I am. I have a wonderful boyfriend, family, and close friends who love my autistic traits. Sometimes, it is difficult to believe that a person could love me unconditionally and non-judgmentally, because of how people have treated me like garbage since I was born. But I have learned that I am not the problem; I am not difficult to love or to care for, and the people who give me a chance come to know this. The problem is with the world, who treats disabled people poorly for refusing to conform to its narrow status quo. Autism is hard, and it’s profoundly disabling. At the same time, autistic people are some of the kindest, funniest, most joyful people you will ever meet. And if you give us a chance, you will come to learn that. #autism #autisticadult #developmentaldisabilities #autismacceptance by @tegankira
