TITANIUM | Limited Edition Print

I explore the nature of the human condition through the power of the female form. I called this painting Titanium as titanium is a symbol of strength.

My paintings are meditations on essence, presence and embodiment. The body representing our pure, untouched nature.

Most of my works are original paintings. On a few occasions I release a print due to the nature of the piece, and my passion for the creative process involved in rare print artworks. This year I am releasing Titanium as a limited edition print.

A moment in the mirror...
Apparently da Vinci called the mirror "the master painter". When I'm creating my artworks I often use the mirror to view them in reverse as I am painting. The mirror is a second eye. It helps me judge if the emotionality and body language still holds power, when seeing the work from a different and reversed perspective. When deep in a creative process and painting the figure from life 'alla prima', I will sometimes use it as an ally. As attached as I can be to what I am seeing unfold on the canvas, I've learnt to also surrender to and also trust the mirror. The painting in the background is Titanium. by @teniquacrawford

TORSO |
I sculpted this torso from life as a study of the figure. It is currently a plaster sculpture, before being cast into bronze or porcelain. I’m enjoying watching how the light falls across the form in the stark autumn light in my studio.

My painting 'Fragment Horizon' next to Richard Dupont's sculpture 'Badende' in Palazzo Franchetti during the last Venice Biennale, 2024. I loved this composition of the two works. The balance between the painted fragment and the delicate concrete form. The shared restraint and rhythm of the feminine. My artwork 'Fragment Horizon' explores themes of embodiment, the subtle erotic, and life emerging from stillness. It also presents the human figure as landscape, connecting the human condition to the natural world.

Summer in the studio… London has been hot! heat wave, quiet streets and still summer air….charcoal drawing from life and Pellegrino. ✍️ by @teniquacrawford

We're excited to share that two of Teniqua Crawford's works have been acquired by the AARDT Foundation.

The foundation is a nonprofit operating out of a former industrial warehouse in Birmingham, Alabama. Its collection spans works from the early Renaissance to the present day, exploring a variety of distinct forms of expression against its utilitarian backdrop.

Crawford's painting, 𝘌𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 explores figuration and the contours of the female form. Her soft painting style both reveals and takes away as her figures drift into empty spaces on the canvas. 𝘌𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 is displayed alongside drawings by Willem de Kooning and Hans Hoffman, as well as Ita Maude Wooller's abstract painting, 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯.

𝘌𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 sits in the middle of a historical dialogue between Hofmann and de Kooning's early-to-mid century drawings of the human body, and Wooller's contemporary work of abstraction. Crawford's figure strikes a balance between that which is concrete and recognisable, and a dreamlike, abstract indeterminancy that arises from her use of negative space.

Her monotype, 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 also joins the collection and is displayed alongside Giovanni Battista Piazetta's 𝘚𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘢 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘤𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘺.

𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸, a reflection painted from behind, is juxtaposed by the classical composition of Piazetta's female saint who leans back in a quiet contemplative ecstasy. The two works share a minimalist close-crop composition, and muted colour relationship. There is a strong contrast in the whites and sepias in both the draped clothing and the nude figure.

Crawford's positioning alongside Piazetta establishes her work in the art historical canon and the development of figurative painting from the 18th century to the modern day. by @teniquacrawford

DUSK | Monotype

I am currently working on a series of monotypes. This is DUSK, of a woman's back and the broken horizons of dusk. I am drawn to both the subtlety and monochromatic power of monotypes. And the decisive immediacy of this form of expression. There is a freedom in it, a sense of being guided by intuition, but it is also a tightrope as it is so sensitive to touch and timing.
A monotype is a one-off unique print that is not repeatable. It is apparently considered the most painterly of all the print making techniques. It is usually made by applying a specialist ink to glass, metal or acrylic sheet. The image is created with the ink and various levels of liquid solvent in order to create the desired movement and effect. I create the forms using brushes, cloth, my hand and also working with the alchemy of the thick ink and how it softly dissolves with the introduction of liquid. Monotype is particularly subtle as the ink needs to be captured at the precise moment the image is forming. The ink image is captured by transferring it to paper using an old printing press. The pressure of first applying the paper, and then subsequently the press roller, also need to be considered while making the image as they are two final moments that impact the ink and final artwork.

Inquiries: If you are interested in my available monotype pieces please direct message or website.
